Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul [4K HDR] - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

The second, shorter duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul, taken from a 4K HDR sample of the extended Phantom Menace cut.

A 4K HDR sample from my Extended Star Wars Episode I Cut, simply titled "The Phantom Menace - Extended Edition". As of today, but cuts have now been updated to a new 2.0 version, featuring several minor tweaks in audio, updates to the HDR color timing (especially for Episode I), tweaks to transitions, and brand new A.I. upscales of many of the deleted scenes. A total of 7 deleted scenes have been restored in the film.

Note: The trimmed down version of this duel is only for the youtube upload. The version scene in the film cut itself won't be intercut in this same way.

Both of my Extended Episode I and II cuts are available in both 4K HDR and 1080p SDR, along with my other edits like the 4.5 hour Revenge of the Sith - The Siege of Mandaore Supercut the, Star Wars Episode IV - The Rogue Cut, and many more!

Use the following Google Doc to see the cuts for yourself, then follow the instructions there.

One of the BEST fight sequences with no dialogue in this series ever

0:41 notice Maul expertly positions himself here to later push Obi into the pit.

It’s funny how I’m trying to figure what this place is and can only conclude that it is a video game level.

I really want to see a entire "What if" story line if Qui Gon won. Causing not only Anakin not to fall but it would have seriously jarred Dooku. Qui Gon's death was one of the biggest impacts to Dooku. The Clone Wars (if they still happened) would have played out VERY differently. Although, the real question is how would things end with Palpatine in such a storyline?

but, really Star Wars - Duel of Fates (IF) the dice had rolled in favor of Anakins fate as a Jedi instead of a Sith and how different the Clone Wars period would have been with it.

Where did lightsaber fights like this go, I miss these kinds of well choreographed fast paced fight scenes, and I love that there is not even a word of dialogue, the looks on their faces are enough to tell the audience that they want to destroy one another, and as soon as those walls give way they do not hesitate to get right back into the fight, and they go at each other with full speed and fury, making things all the more intense, I'll say this right now, THE PHANTOM MENACE is UNDERRATED!!!

At 00:09 - 00:17 is the choreography of this moment of the duel is one of the best ever.

0:22 I like that the only reason Obi-Wan was able to break Maul’s saber was because he did the exact same move at the beginning of the fight so Obi-Wan exploited that.

How did I just now notice that when Obi-Wan cut Mauls lightsaber and kicked him at 0:25 the second half of his saber goes flying back and hits the wall, causing it to catch fire? Oh my god I’m so dumb!

Come on, Disney has NOTHING like this.

So, apparently they needed to slow down the footage of these two by 10% in order to properly catch it on the cameras. If you speed up the video to x1.1, that's how fast they were really fighting.

I absolutely love how Obi-Wan's fighting style became more aggressive after the loss of Qui-Gon. He already stood on business, but the addition of being absolutely pissed at Maul made him stand higher on business.

Obi-Wan should've still kept Qui-Gon's lightsaber and used it in Attack of the Clones until he was captured on Geonosis.

Maul was superior and only lost due to hubris and plot. I mean he just stood there and watched kenobi flip over him. Other than that, legendary scene.

Love this battle, no music. All fighting.

Something that really impresses me about the phrase from 0:08-0:18 is that both of them are almost entirely aggressive.
Normally, it's easier to choreograph a fight by having one attack while the other defends and switching back and forth, but here it looks like they're both attacking at the same time and strategically having their attacks get in the way of their opponents. That must have been challenging for the choreographers.

I love how if you run 0:42-0:44 back in slow mo, you can actually see Maul pull an “oh shit” face as he dodges Obi-Wan’s overhead swipe. I think this was the precise moment where Maul realized he was fucked, because right after that he tries to end the fight by just pushing Obi-Wan down the pit.

One f***ing minute and 39 seconds! That is what the best light saber battle in Star Wars history takes! 😱

man that rear block Ewen does in the first few seconds is really cool, I love how Ewen is going toe to toe with Ray Park and they're both delivering such measured and trained performances in this fight. Two masters at their peak
