Understanding Your Relationship Patterns: What Connects You? What Triggers You? w/ Dr. Kate Truitt
Показать описание
In this psychoeducation video, Dr. Kate Truitt helps us to explore who we are when in relationship with others. She explains that having healthy relationships is critical for us to truly thrive in our day to day lives. Unfortunately, many of us experienced painful relationships growing up that taught us that some humans are dangerous. Some individuals with severe childhood trauma have a part of our brain that learns to interpret all humans as fear inducing.
So how do we create healthy relationships, especially if we’ve been taught that humans can be dangerous? If our friend Amy the amygdala perceives a threat, she will send out warning signs. She encodes sensory experiences along with thoughts and feelings in a moment of threat or trauma. Having this information can help us to create space when we get triggered.
Dr. Kate then walks us through a journaling exercise, in which we write down four interactions. The first is an interaction with someone we care about that went really well. The second is an interaction with someone we feel neutral towards that went really well. The third is an interaction with someone we care about that went poorly. And lastly, the fourth is an interaction with someone we don’t really like that went poorly.
She then asks us to notice the details of what was happening in our mind and body. Once we’ve done that with each of our four interactions, she asks us to cross compare the patterns. These data points are critical for starting to understand our interpersonal interactions with the world around us. It’s important to understand how our past affects our present.
