After D-Day while Easy Company is recovering at a camp by Utah Beach, Alton Moore steals a bike from the infantry’s depot. Malarky and him then sneak it on to the landing craft, then the ship and somehow manage to take it back to England. While the rest of the company rides in a train in England, Moore and Malarkey follow them in a Motorcycle. They’re later caught by Sobel, who is now a supply officer. He tells them that he knows it is stolen and wants them to return it when they ship out.

As someone who's been in the Army for 10yrs, seeing a prick of a leader follow you to your duty station is absolutely demoralizing

Kudos to David Schwimmer for being so good at being the ‘ass’ In this tale.

I love the little hint of pride Sobel has in his voice when he addresses Malarkey as Sergeant Malarkey. Sobel is busting Malarkey's ass in this scene, but he's happy to see him.

DAMN...Schwimmer was EXCELLENT in this role! I ran into him a few years ago at a Japanese restaurant. My wife "fangirled" over him being in "Friends." He thanked her profusely. I then told him, "DUDE--your CPT Sobel character was outstanding!" His eyes lit up and he shook my hand vigorously, saying, "thank you SO much for that. It makes me happy that you liked that role." Schwimmer was just a really awesome dude.

Irl it was Sgt Roderick Strohl who went AWOL from the hospital that took Sobel's ride. Strohl got a one-day pass from a doctor and hitched a ride to Aldbourne to rejoin Easy Company where he ran into Sobel. Even though he knew that Strohl had gone AWOL, Sobel still gave him a ride on his jeep.

To be fair, no supply officer would let anyone "borrow" army property.

Sobel has one hell of a story man.

None of the guys of Easy Company liked him but they all pretty much unanimously agreed that it was because of how he trained them that they became what they were. Excellent training officer with absolutely shit ability to lead in the field or adapt to changes.

His death is pretty heart breaking. Doted on his wife, was tough on his kids but apparently treated them well. Not sure how but became estranged from them. In the 70's he put a gun to his head and tried to kill himself but failed, ended up severing his optic nerves. Spent the rest of his life in a VA facility where he died alone from malnutrition. His wife and kids didn't even know until a week after he died when his sister called them to let them know. His wife believed he tried to kill himself because he believed he had cancer but wasn't willing to get tested but that's just her theory, no one actually knows for sure why he did it.

I like to believe in this scene, Sobel is proud of the fellas. Schwimmer plays it so that it’s kinda left to interpretation, but his cadence and facial expressions lead me to believe he was proud of Malarkey for the promotion.

Sobel: "What is this, anybody?"
Malarkey: "Uhh, it's a motorcycle, sir."
Sobel: "Sgt. Malarkey thinks this is a motorcycle, that is incorrect Sgt., your weekend pass is canceled. This is United States Army property."

The fact we all hate Cpt Sobel speaks volumes to how well Schwimmer played the character.

To be fair Sobel loved E company, he was upset when announced unfit for combat, you can see his face when he recieved the command.

We got our shipping containers back from Iraq. I could see across the motor pool the battalion commander and sergeant-major opening the headquarters' container. For all to see a John Deere Gator.

The only gators I saw issued to anybody in my battalion were the ones we wore around our necks.

A thing to keep in mind is that this series is based on the testimonials of the soldiers. Sobel was a hardass and it's hard to know if the rest was exaggerated because of it.

We see that with the coward officer that got assigned from outside the company. In reality he was injured in said attack and would go on to be awarded for heroism later in the war. His portrayal in the series being completely unearned.

After being initially transferred, Sobel actually came back in 1944 jumped with the 101st on D-Day and saw combat, leading a squad of men against a German machine gun nest and taking it out. He won a bronze star and then became a supply officer.

The man was a dick to Easy Company but he certainly redeemed himself.

The way he said he got promoted is pure genius and ressonastes everywhere, nor just the army. Idiots get promoted.
