Dick Winters - He's promoted to Battalion XO and has difficulty adjusting to life behind a desk rather than out on the front lines. He's continually haunted by memories of the last battle he fought in and a young German soldier he shot.

His care for his men was more important than the promotion...

Ambrose writes that Moose "Heyliger was a good C.O. He visited the outposts at night. He went on patrols himself. He saw to the men as best could be done. Like the men in the foxholes, he never relaxed. The tension was always there. His company was spread much too thin to prevent German patrols from penetrating the line, and the dangerous possibility of another breakthrough of the size of that of October 5 was in his mind constantly. He bore up under the responsibility well, took the strain, did his duty."

It blows my mind that Richard “Dick” Winters was only 25-26 years old when leading men of easy company. God bless men like Richard Winters and the rest of the 101st!

Doc Rowe is right there. Taking care of his men. Both physically and mentally.

What brilliant acting, you could see and feel the pain on his face, knowing he’d be leaving Easy Co., Dick Rip Sir

The synchronicity between this and the scene when Sobel loses Easy is well written, Sobel loses Easy and asks who’s taking over because he’s afraid Winters will get the company and be shown as a better officer and more popular, exposing his own weakness. Winters on the other hand asks who’s taking over, because he’s concerned for the safety of his men, showing he’s a leader and his strength.

His only doubt is for the fate of his men.

It’s amazing how he went from 2nd Lt. when training stateside to Major in a span of just months. In WW2. great leaders got battlefield commissions fast. I’m sure the causality rate was part of it but Winters was exceptional.

How different was his tone when asking who will take his place as opposed yo when sobel lost his command. You can hear that he cares about those men like sons.

Field promotions are the best. Audie Murphy made rank the same way. Everyone sees how well you keep your shtuff together, including the brass. Sometimes good guys do finish first.

For anyone wondering:

XO is short for Executive Officer. This isn't a rank, but rather a position. The XO might also be called the First Officer or one similar term.

The XO is second in command, whether it's an Army unit, a Navy ship, or Starfleets Enterprise. They are usually one rank below their CO, or commanding officer. XOs handle a lot of the organizational and bureaucratic work for their CO and enforce the rules, so the Captain can run the unit as a whole. They take over command when the Captain is not present. And they get hands on experience for possible promotion to CO themselves.

"Colonel Strayer is...well...he could use some help."

What a diplomatic way of saying Colonel Strayer can't handle his duties and needs an experienced field officer to help him get his ducks in a row.

MAJ Winters addressing (still) CPT Sobel towards the end was priceless.

“Salute the rank, not the man”

The acting is so believable. The care for his men, the brotherhood they share and the idea of being off the line while knowing his guys are in constant danger. He doesn't want to abandon them but also knowning there is a bigger picture too. That his spot will be filled by a good guy, makes it easier.

Pivotal moment in the life of a great man. He's just given his ticket out of the horror of combat but he also knows that those men look up to him and depend on him. Of course I don't know Dick Winters personally but from the real world accounts this actor played him so well. You get the feeling he is wrestling with this promotion in his head just by his body language. This has also been the problem for humanity since it began, the people who should be at the top leading don't want the position.

The fatherly general ❤ He knew the feelings that would rage in Winters heart about the promotion. He’s a leader of leaders.
