When I was in Basic, when we poured out our canteens, it was over our heads to make sure we HAD drank all the water. They made no secret that they wanted us to drink 1 canteenful of water per hour during field training to keep hydrated.

"Beethoven's a genius. Sobel is an asshole."
"Do you think there's a single man in Easy company that wouldn't hike Curahee in full gear in under two hours just for a chance to piss in that man's coffee?"

The interesting thing is that although they hated him, the veterans all agreed that he was a fantastic trainer and made them the best. Fascinating that!

Winters said, no doubt Sobel made Easy Company what it was but he was a bully and why the men bonded so much was the pure shared hatred of Sobel. Great trainer but a horrendous leader.

In my infantry training, our sergeant made us do the opposite of this. He had us line up with our canteens, kinda like in the show, and commanded us to chug them dry. We were then to overturn them and have nothing but drops trickle out.

Next, we were commanded to refill our canteens, and line back up. Then we were to overturn our full canteens, over our own heads.

This was indoors, so we had to mop our barracks immediately afterwards.

This made sense to me though. It was summer, we're fully decked out in long sleeves and armour, and carrying a lot of equipment. Even when we were indoors, the barracks weren't air conditioned. There were days where we stood at attention in puddles of our own sweat. 💦

There was one march that we had to do that took place early. I didn't drink enough before going on it. I didn't feel well; my chest felt tight, and I was struggling to keep up, but I kept pushing myself hard. About fifty meters from the finish line, my legs gave out from under me — just turned to Jell-O and buckled. When I tried to speak, my words were slurred, like I was drunk. I became a heat/dehydration casualty. 🥵

My buddies dragged me across the finish, and the medics had me drink salted water in the shade for a while. Thankfully, I was fine later, and continued on with the course and passed.

Not hydrating isn't a sign of being tough. I pushed myself as hard as I could, with the finish line in sight, and my body still gave out. 💀

It was an eye-opening experience, and I've been extra careful to not let that happen again since. 💧

The irony is that if Sobel had been kept in command, he would have died in the skies over France before even popping his chute. The company CO's plane took flak enroute to the drop zone and if I remember correctly, none of the men aboard survived. Sobel's replacement, BIll Meehan (spelling?) died in Sobel's place before ever seeing action in France.

I remember seeing documentary about training in the SAS, one of the things they had to do was in several kilometres March, with full kit. They were allowed to drink the contents of the canteen, but they had to maintain weight. So anytime they drank from their canteen, they had to fill it back up to make sure it maintained weight.

Being great at instilling discipline in the men you’re training and being well liked by those men are generally mutually exclusive

Crazy how times have changed. When I was in boot camp, they made it abundantly clear we HAD to drink all our water whenever, they even gave us 2 canteens. At the end before sleep they’d have us hold them upside down and if any canteen dripped even the slightest drop of water they’d make us refill our canteens and drink them all again. They’d repeat this until everyone drank enough water
