"We salute the rank, not the man...and your weekend pass is revoked."

I hated Capt. Sobel since episode one. On the other hand, if an actor can pull of so much hate for his character, that's an epic performance. David Schwimmer is an awesome actor!

Not exactly revenge, it’s him being the better honorable man, and that was his final showing of how much more of a man he was than sobel.

Major Winters was too much of a man for revenge. He just corrected a minor discrepancy in his life, like removing a small stone from his shoe.

Honestly though...Schwimers performance...stunning.

This was mentioned from Stephen Ambrose book ⬇️
"Sobel was as hard on his officers as on the enlisted men. Their physical training was the same, but when the men heard the final “fall out” of the day, they were free to go to their bunks, while the officers had to study the field manuals, then take a test on the assignment Sobel had given them. When he held officers’ meetings, Winters recalled, “He was very domineering. There was no give-and-take. His tone of voice was high-pitched, rasplike. He shouted instead of speaking in a normal way. It would just irritate you.” The officers’ nickname for their captain was “The Black Swan.”
Sobel had no friends. Officers would avoid him in the officers’ club. None went on a pass with him, none sought out his company. No one in Easy knew anything about his previous life and no one cared. He did have his favorites, of whom No. 1 was company 1st Sgt. William Evans. Together, Sobel and Evans played men off against one another, granting a privilege here, denying one there.
Anyone who has ever been in the Army knows the type. Sobel was the classic chickenshit. He generated maximum anxiety over matters of minimum significance. Paul Fussell, in his book Wartime, has the best definition: “Chickenshit refers
to behavior that makes military life worse than it need be: petty harassment of the weak by the strong; open scrimmage for power and authority and prestige, - sadism thinly disguised as necessary discipline, - a constant ‘paying off of old scores’; and insistence on the letter rather than the spirit of ordinances. Chickenshit is so called—instead of horse-or bull-or elephant shit—because it is small-minded and ignoble and takes the trivial seriously.”(3)
Sobel had the authority over the men. Lieutenant Winters had their respect. The two men were bound to clash. No one ever said so directly, and not everyone in Easy recognized what was happening, and Winters did not want it that way, but they were in competition to be the leader.
Sobel’s resentment of Winters began during the first week at Toccoa. Winters was leading the company in calisthenics. He was up on a stand, demonstrating, “helping the fellows get through the exercise. These boys, they were sharp. And I had their complete attention.” Colonel Sink walked past. He stopped to watch. When Winters finished, Sink walked up to him. “Lieutenant, ” he asked, “how many times has this company had calisthenics?”
“Three times, sir, ” Winters replied.
“Thank you very much, ” Sink said. A few days later, without consulting Sobel, he promoted Winters to 1st lieutenant. For Sobel, Winters was a marked man from that day. The C.O. gave the platoon leader every dirty job that he could find, such as latrine inspection or serving as mess officer."

"In 1970, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol in an attempted suicide.[11] The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited the other side of his head. Both of his optic nerves were severed by the shot, leaving him blind.[11] Soon afterward, he began living at a VA assisted-living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. He died there of malnutrition on 30 September 1987.[11][12] No memorial services were held for him.[11]"

No, I disagree vehemently.
That was not revenge. Winters did not have the time nor the inclination to exact revenge.
He was faced with deliberate and egregious insubordination.
If he could have let it pass, he would have done so. He did the minimum amount required to end the insubordination.
Winters had too many real battles to fight. He had no time to go looking for phony battles.

I think a lot of people here are missing the point. At the end, when Major Winters gets saluted by Captain Sobel, there is a key context in what exactly he's saying.

"We salute the RANK, not the MAN."

He's telling Sobel that through all that bullshit, he respected the tin on his collar more than him. Every time he saluted, that salute to the Lieutenant, and later Captain, but never to Sobel himself.

What a beautiful verbal bitchslap.

Sobel was good at imposing discipline and training though was highly incompetent in combat

0:18 He wasn't wrong. Easy Company was the finest company in this regiment. He was extra demanding for them and it was worth it.

Sobel may have been a terrible commanding officer but he was a hell of a training instructor. His brutal training is a large part of why Easy Company was so successful. The men in Easy hated him but many have attributed the company's success and effectiveness to Sobel's hard training

It’s 2 great examples of leadership.. one by example and the other by fear... Sobel didn’t understand leading by example and the fact the men liked him which is why he picked on winters and wanted him to discipline the men for any infraction he could find, he was trying to teach winters his methods but Winters clearly didn’t agree which is why they clashed. In the end leading through fear will only work when you have respect. Sobel lost that respect when he was useless in the field and then losing Winters to mess.

What they need to do is piece together the clips where Major Winters snatches the pen from Sobel's hand to sign the document requesting Trial by Courts Martial, then all the men signing their documents requesting to be relieved of their NCO status, and then all said-NCOs saluting Winters as they walk by. That was *the bomb*. Brings a tear to your eye and makes you want to sharpen the ol' bayonet.

This was the true meaning of Sobel's reassignment. While Sobel was moved to a place where he wouldn't see much combat and wouldn't see much upward mobility, Winters fought through the war and his leadership had him promoted multiple times, far outranking Sobel in the end.

When Sobel said "irregardless" I died a little inside.
