How to Increase Your Speed for Martial Arts and Fighting

Everyone always asks how to increase their speed for faster punches and kicks. So, let's talk about it!

►Click here to support this channel. Thank you! :)

If you want to get faster in the martial arts, I've got three quick tips for you... and one reality check.

First tip: Don’t wind up. Your fist only needs to go from Point A to Point B, so don’t take a detour to Point C. That might actually triple the distance your fist is traveling! Even if you only wind up a little, you’re still adding time to your technique.

Second tip: Stay loose. If you get angry and tighten up, your muscles will work against you. To be fast, stay cool.

Third tip: Practice. Train your body to only use the muscles you need. Make it a goal to be as efficient as possible.

REALITY CHECK! You can't just keep getting faster and faster. At some point, you're going to hit your limit. But consider this... even if you can't increase your speed objectively, you can still increase your speed subjectively.

If you want to make your best move seem faster, set it up moving slower. Like a snake, hypnotize your opponent into thinking you’re only going to move at a low speed, then explode. That’s what the pros are doing when they talk about setting the pace of a fight or breaking rhythms.

That means when it comes to speed, you shouldn’t just focus on how fast you can move, you should practice setting up your moves so the other guy doesn’t see them coming. Become a master of manipulating time.

So, instead of always practicing at full speed, mix it up. Set a rhythm, then break it. Remember--no matter how fast you can move, if you keep moving at just one speed, you'll become predictable... and that means beatable!

Think of it this way—your goal isn’t to be as fast as you can be, it’s just to be fast enough to get what you want. Hypnotize your opponent and you should have all the speed you need.

For all the old guys out there, remember this, precision beats power and timing beats speed

my best advice is rhythm: try to perform the moves slowly. Then train the same moves with counting or a metronom. When you get the hang of it start increasing the speed- it works really well

True stuff, at 51 I have noticed my speed and power are still pretty good, but reaction time is slipping. I think my mind is more focused on when that Matlock marathon is starting. But the element of surprise and tactics are now in my favor. The whippersnappers do NOT expect a combo nut shot/pimp slap to come from an old timer with a limp in mid sentence. Plus I have that grocery bag full of cans of Ensure to finish them off if need be.

I really like the line from Kung Fu Hustle, " In the world of kung fu, speed determines the winner!"

I'm a student of the Joe Lewis Fighting System, and broken rhythm is one of the techniques it suggests. However, for me, nothing gets my fist into my opponent faster than using the technique of independent motion, because there are two factors, not just distance, but also the reaction time of the opponent to see the strike.

This is crazy, I was literally thinking today about when you would put out your next video and I was just teaching the same thing about rhythm a few days ago. I always say rhythm is the only thing that works when broken.
