Hyper mobility chronic pain patient of 20 years … this is the same thing my physical therapists say to me!!! I have to tell you though when you are in horrible pain stretching feels soooo much better!!

thats really interesting, im pretty flexible. can do stuff other people cant, like touching palms on the floor instead of touching toes and weird stuff with my shoulders. But everything always feels stiff. gonna try stability instead of stretching

I have ehlers danlos syndrome. Its a hypermobility disorder, among other things. I was in alot of pain for years until I finally was able to figure out EXACTLY what Tom is talking about here. Doctors and experts can be very unhelpful, because they dont know or understand. For hypermobility issues, you can be too loose and too tight at the same time. Your connective tissues are chronically loose, and so the muscles tighten to compensate, causing pain and discomfort, so you try and stretch it out, and it makes you more loose, and causes more tightening: its awful! Exactly like Tom points out, the counterintuitive solution to feeling tight and bound up constantly is to focus on developing multi-directional strength and stability in the joints! At 70yrs old, I found out I have a neuromuscular disease where my muuscle cells are dying. My lifelong BALANCE of stretch and strengthen has delayed the progress of my genetics disease. I learned WEAK MUSCLES TIGHTEN for stability. STRONG MUSCLES CAN LENGTHEN SAFELY.

This makes sense to me, lunges yes, but I also notice I feel great after I went for a bike ride, legs, thighs. So I get what you are saying.
And if my back is not completely out whack, it can help to loosen it too.

Tom, 60burs old rt knee replacement Dec27 left knee 4 yrs ago. Fuzed wrist 2015 after 5 surgeries. What's the chance of a face to face video and pay you for a program to get me back into full shape. Love your videos and techniques

Is this lengthen and strengthen ? I get it now why u wld feel better if ur muscles r stronger

Very true, my mobility only started improving when I started doing mobility strength work like reverse lunges and single leg rdls. Then when I do stretch, it’s way deeper because of that strength

Ive been stretching the heck out of my hips for weeks now and all i have to show for it is IT band pain lol. You think maybe i need to strengthen? I defe have weak glutes hamstrings and adductors.
