Watching these scenes now, Varys seems like a decent dude. Not sure why he seemed so suspect the first time I saw this. Conversely, littlefinger seemed okay right up until the betrayed ned.

The boy who owed everything to Jon Arryn that Varys was actually talking about was Peter Baelish (Littlefinger). Varys was testing Eddard and Eddard failed.

Yes, Ned’s mind immediately goes to Ser Hugh but that description could easily apply to Littlefinger.

I love that at the beginning, it seems like Littlefinger is more trustworthy, and Varys is the slippery character - the master of spies, "the Spider". But as soon as Varys comes to Ned in private, it is clear he is the one with Ned's best interests and more noble goals of serving the realm. Littlefinger is only in it for himself.

Sean Bean was too perfect as Ned Stark. I’m reading the books and I’m trying to imagine the characters my own way, but I can’t help but imagine Sean as Ned. No matter how hard I try.

1:00 THAT'S But it makes so much sense!! And all around there were evidence of what kind of place this was, and Varys was honestly very kind to alert him about people watching him, and yet Ned was unable to read his envinronment (pretty common human mistake, to be honest). Ned was more lost than the John Travolta meme. If this is survival of the fittest he was totally unfit for this place.
