Game of Thrones S03E04 -- The Wizard in the Box scene

A conversation about revenge taking time with a reveal that the whole time the man Varys hates was in that box. That is good writing.

Varys is, hands down, the most powerful and awe-inspiring character in Game of Thrones.

People always underestimate those who are willing to play the long game. And this scene demonstrates that perfectly.

When Varys is telling the story, I imagine the wizard inside slowly realizing the kind of situation he’s in. Like he’s thinking to himself, “hey, wait a minute, this guy sounds familiar.”

This was such a powerful, almost chilling scene. Varys is the perfect example of a flawed protagonist. This is by far his darkest moment yet it is also his most intimate. It’s shocking because we never see him this dark. It also explains his devotion to the “realm” including the downtrodden. Great scene. Season 3 is by far my favorite.

I live the lighting shot they used for Varys in the mirror. It's vague because the mirror is cloudy and dark and his face is almost silhouetted but for his eyes.
Compare that to pretty much every scene we see Varys in where he's in full light, cordial, pleasant, polite, calm and wearing his figurative mask.
This scene reveals a very intimate part of Varys and for a brief moment, through the reflection in the mirror, we see a vague glimpse of his unmasked, true self.
God's the show used to be epic!

I love the music that plays in this. The dark, subtle tune. In a show were dangers are very real; swords, arrows, and human cruelty, the threat of magic is special. Something that respects no crown and overcomes every defense.

Mouth sewn shut around a wreath of thorns affixed to his head, fingernails missing from trying to claw his way out... All the while sitting quietly hearing Varys explain who it was who turned him into a eunuch, how he survived, and what he had become to get his revenge... Just before opening the box with a now "fully-aware" sorcerer. They should have just hired RR Martin to write the 8th season damnit...
