Precedence for the Filioque can be found near verbatim in Tertullian's "against praxeas" chapter 2. So before the Creed was formed, the filioque has not just scriptural basis but also it has basis in church history, the idea of the Filioque was existing before the nicene creed but added to make clear the understanding of the trinity.

The creed cannot be changed, especially by a single person, that was agreed in the Ecumenical Councils. The filioque breaks the balance between the Holy Trinity, therefore harming the most inner core of the Christian faith. You can’t combat an heresy by creating a new one.

Proceed is a verb meaning from a source. If the Father and Son are one, then logically the Spirit comes from the one source, which happens to be the Father and Son. However, if the Father and Son are not one, then the spirit would only come from the creator (father). Which then means the holy trinity does not exist. So, which is it? A separate god head, or one God as the Holy Trinity? Asking for a friend ;)

So the creed was formed by ecumenical council and weather right or wrong in theology, it was changed without ecumenical council. Then the East raised their voice in opposition to the change without council, which resulted in the pope excomunicating the patriarch of Constantinople which resulted in the division of the church. As a Catholic I have to ask, was the filioque responsible for ridding the heracy in the West? And does the EO make a valid point about the pope being first among equals?

It was changed/altered, therefore nullifying the validity of it. Seek the Eastern Orthodox church, I was a cradle Roman Catholic, fell away, turned to new age, hit rock bottom, started thirsting for the truth in Christ, researched and begged God for mercy and Jesus revealed the Orthodox Church to me. I am now Greek Orthodox and have never felt so much joy and contentment in Christ God.

I guess either way you think about the Trinity, both ways make sense in the fact it doesn’t change how I perceive The Son. Still God made flesh. Catholic and Orthodox are the two lungs of the Church, and I hate that the Orthobros hate us so much.

I’m not an apologist or theologian so can someone explain to me why this is such a big deal? Jesus said he was sending the Holy Spirit as did the Father so
I’m not sure why this is an issue.

The heresy was stifled not because of the filioque itself. It was "successfully" handled because of massive defunding and violent persecution by Theodosius I, orchestrator and executor of the Nicene Creed.
