Today I was confirmed into the LCMS! Dr. Cooper, you were instrumental in my discovery of Lutheranism and the fostering of knowledge of Lutheran theology. Thank you! Because of you, there’s another Lutheran!

"Baptism SAVES? Dude, you ever heard of the thief on the cross?"

As a baptist - This, is what I like most about Lutheranism!
That baptism does give one full assurance of salvation and being truly engrafted into the olive tree of Christ.

Baptism saves, and this saving grace can be lost if one resists or rejects it, then the person is not saved.

I am glad to see this truth being taught. 1 Pet. 3:21 says it, that settles it. Scripture warns against falling away and losing grace, and warnings are not given for impossible things. I keep having this conversation with Calvinists (Baptists) and get nowhere.

Now THIS is Lutheranism. Not this modern contemporary stuff. And I say this as a LCMS member.

Acts 10:47 is an (Apostolic) declaration that water baptism does not save (from sins or Hell at all, that is). Peter declared this after seeing that Cornelius and his house were ALREADY saved: by faith in Jesus' words preached to them by Peter (cf. Acts 3:16, John 6:37, Matthew 4:4/Luke 4:4).

Water on the flesh has no power to save the spirit. Only the Living Water by faith in Him ALONE (and not in "sacred substances", or anything of a religion/church at all) can cause you to NEVER thirst again: John 4:14.

Good summary, but it was 2 minutes and 37 seconds too long.

Of course when you look at the actual history and scholarship, things are more nuanced than that. For instance, when it comes to the flood, it's very likely there was a large regional flood in the Mesopotamian area and the geologic record supports such a thing. However, it's very unlikely there was actually a worldwide flood. Further, the practice of baptism itself among the Jews started with the Essenes. It was one of their initial rituals. There may also have been some baptism among the Egyptians with some parts of their religion and mystery schools. People tend to look at the Bible as this stand-alone thing rather than keeping in mind the writings were just a small part of a much wider context and culture, including pseudepigrapha, mythology, and tradition.

If you have faith, your baptism washes your sins. Baptism by God through faith as you have faith that God works his grace through salvation.

It's as salvific as saying prayer saves through faith, "dear God i sinned forgive me amen" faith saved prayer deal.

Being baptized to me is the same concept. Only the deathbed is exempt of baptism for salvation.

Does baptizing infants save? I really want to know. And my other question is, does not being baptized mean no salvation?

But what about the latter part of 1 Peter 3:21, upon which Peter declares the true nature of baptism - not as a ceremonial washing, but rather as a pledge of a clear conscience towards God? This sounds awfully like repentance, and therefore appears to suggest that baptism saving is not with water but by one's penance.

The fact that this video is 2 minutes 38 seconds. As in Acts 2:38. Chef's kiss Dr. Cooper!🤌

Faith always came first in the Bible, and those who gladly received the word were baptized. Simon in Acts 8 is the only exception, for he never came to faith given by God.

I don’t understand how physical baptism isn’t considered a work of obedience. We are literally doing it in response to a command from God.

I do understand the point about the word of God being a means of salvation and you out baptism in that same category, but I think the difference is the word of God is used to bring about the faith by which we are saved. By grace through faith apart from works. Physical baptism is an expression of that faith.

The baptism that God does without hands (Colossians 2:11) I believe would have to be the baptism of the Holy Spirit which seals us for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30) and testifies with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16). Water baptism involves hands and puts a middleman between man and their salvation even if that man has believed and trusted in Christ for salvation.

1 Corinthians 1:17 KJV — For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Is baptism part of the gospel for today? No.

Acts 20:20-21 KJV — And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV — Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Stop preaching a false gospel.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV — For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

The robe, ring and shoes in the parable of the Prodigal Son correspond to baptism.
