'Baptism Doth Also Now Save Us' 1 Peter 3:21 Explained | Does Water Baptism Save The Soul?

In this video, I explain 1 Peter 3:21, a passage that is often misquoted to teach "Baptismal Regeneration". Unfortunately, many proponents of this false doctrine purposely fail to quote the verse in its entirety. Does water baptism save us from the penalty of sin? Absolutely not!

It's so trajically funny how the NIFB calls you a false teacher simply because you don't teach a sinner's prayer for salvation.

The purpose of Romans 10: 8, 9, 10, is to put all of your confidence (trust) in the person and finished work of Christ alone for salvation.

I mean Acts 16: 31 is pretty clear.

Also the book of John says believe about 99 times, no mention of a sinner's prayer or any formula.

Anyway, good video brother and please keep up the good work.

The key verse in all this is Acts 10:43 kjv which clearly shows us that remission of sins only comes through faith in the messiah Jesus Christ. Peter was clear on how men were to be saved before he spoke in Acts 2:38 KJV
He said to call on the name of the Lord to be saved. He never said to receive water baptism to be saved.
And if one looks at Peter calling for the baptism of repentance for remission of sins you have to find out how remission of sins comes. And again, Acts 10:43 is the answer as we're shown that faith in Christ is how one receives remission of sins. Thus, Acts 2:38 is speaking about receiving the baptism of the Spirit through repentance a change of mind from rejecting Christ to believing on him for remission of sins. And then we see in verse 41 that they all get water baptized. This is very similar to the Ethiopian in Acts 8:36-38 and to the gentiles in Acts 10:47-48 KJV God clearly has an order and he gave revelation to Paul to warn us not to exalt the act of water baptism over the power of the gospel. 1 Cor 1:14-17 KJV

Brilliant question, I'll have to use that one. Thank you for serving the Lord! Proverbs 17:17

All who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved. Man’s physical act of baptism saves no one. To believe so goes against the whole purpose of Jesus. Upon profession of faith, one should be baptized to tell others you believe in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus. I believe a person who goes into baptism thinking this is their salvation is not truly saved. Christ alone will save you. He was sinless, paid the price on the cross to be buried and rose from the grave.

@OnoDiamante i beleive that 1 Peter 3:21 is reffering to the Holy Spirit and the baptisim we recieve the moment we believe.

I see it as just as Noah was saved by the Ark, in Christ we are saved. So the Ark is being paralleled with Christ. The “baptism” is not speaking of a literal baptism by water (the removal of the filth of the flesh), but a baptism through faith in Christ. When we believe in Christ, our conscience is cleansed (the actual “baptism” spoken of here). This correlates to Jesus giving those who believer “living water” via the Holy Spirit, Who makes us clean. It’s a cleaning of the heart in regards to coming to Christ via faith, not a cleaning of the flesh via a physical baptism.

There, s enough scripture that proves baptism is necessary, 1 peter says baptism does save us, what about acts 2:38, chp.10, chapter 19. Mathew 28:19, Jesus comanded us to be baptised. I will. Not take a person, s opinion on what I must do! I will obey the bibles word. Some people just don, t want to go down in the waters of baptism I, m glad I did.

Just a question: is the apostle John at odds with justification and salvation by faith when he states in 1 John 1 & 2 that we all sin and when we sin we have a advocate with the Father etc. But then he says that if we say we know him we must keep his commandments, and so if we don't keep his commandments we don't know him. And if we are to abide in him we have to walk as he did. It's almost like the apostle John is advocating works?

Is the keeping of the commandment therefore..not to say we don't have sin, as this would be to transgress the commandment ordering us to confess our unrighteouness before God.

Thanks again for your amazing sermons ❤️

What does this mean ? I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Luke 15 7

Carnal wisdom can't comprehend the spiritual baptism, which has nothing to do with your physical body or physical water. The baptism which Peter (and especially Paul) talks about is the regeneration, which saves you from sin. This baptism can only be performed by the Holy Spirit.
Colossians 2:12 KJV — Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Romans 6:4 KJV — Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
1 Corinthians 12:13 KJV — For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Keep doing what you're doing. On the video about James where it says faith without works is dead I'll have to double check how you explained it again but I just understand it to be a different dispensation. Romans through Philemon is the church age and after Philemon is mostly for people during the tribulation who missed the rapture and James sounds like faith plus works because it is. Not taking the mark for example. My wish is to not raise contention only to learn. A reply would be appreciated to let me know if you agree or not and why.

Hmm…. Interesting take. This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone teach this verse this way. Even from trinitarian and oneness views that I’ve heard have all said the “putting away of the filth of the flesh” doesn’t mean sins, it means baptism isn’t a physical body cleansing. ESV “Not as a removal of dirt from the body”
NIV “Not the removal of dirt from the body”
NLT “Not by removing dirt from your body”
And so on, I think you get my point.
But this verse lines up clearly with what Jesus said in Mark 16:16 “He that believeth AND IS BAPTIZED SHALL BE SAVED…”
Acts 2:38 “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS….”
Col 2:11-12 “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:”
12 “Buried with him in baptism, ……”
And there are other verses but I think the bible is pretty clear baptism is important. And as far as 1 Peter 3:21, if baptism was just a statement of our faith, why would it then give us a clear conscience towards God? Unless it is saying what the rest of the bible is saying, that it is for the remission of sins, therefor, because our sins are forgiven it gives us a clear conscience towards God. Which makes the verse very clear as to why Peter said “baptism doth also now save us…”. As far as your video goes, you still failed to explain why Peter would even use the language that baptism saves us, if in fact it doesn’t. Thanks. God bless.

You are directly denying what this passage says. Baptism saves by the resurrection of Christ; I guess your conclusion is the resurrection has nothing to do with salvation.. You are denying the word of God. You are using sophistry and cunning words to deny the obvious in this passage. Repent!

The amount of mental gymnastics you evangelicals have to go through to "refute" as position that was taught by the Church (universally) for 1500 years is astonishing to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the crux of your argument relies on your interpretation of "the removal of dirt from the body".

First though lets walk through the verse.

"21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (NASB)

First it is clear that the action being done in this verse is done by baptism. This evidenced by verse 20. Now baptism saves us as a secondary cause, meaning that God uses baptism as a vessel to deliver salvation to His people.

Now the crux of your argument seems to be as mentioned above, that the "removal of dirt from the flesh" does not refer to the removal of sins. There's nothing in this verse that warrants your interpretation of that phrase. And if you were to interpret that phrase in such a manner, it would contradict Acts 2:38.

Now as I've stated above, water baptism is clearly defined as the secondary cause of salvation. Any view to the contrary is indefensible. Another factor of this verse is that you seem to miss an important part of this verse. We are told HOW baptism saves us: it is the appeal to God for a new consciousness. When you interpret "not the removal of dirt from the flesh" properly, this verse creates a detailed explanation of baptismal regeneration. What saves us? Baptism. How? As an appeal to consciousness, not in anything inherent in the water.
