Does someone's stomach actually shrink if they eat less? It sounds straightforward and has been accepted for years, but is it true? In this video, VERIFY reporter Meghan Bragg speaks with doctors about this viewer question.

According to the Bariatric Centers for America, almost all Americans have the same stomach size despite varying heights and weights. Your stomach acts as a bit of a balloon, growing and shrinking based on how much food you eat.

Dr. Payal Kohli says no matter how much you restrict your food intake, once you reach adulthood and your stomach is fully developed, it will not get any smaller. The "balloon" will remain the same size your adult life. #WakeUpCLT #VERIFY

So we can say that no, your stomach does not shrink if you eat less. Kohli says it's actually just your appetite that grows or shrinks based on your eating habits.

This makes sense. I have always said it would shrink, so I guess I can not say that anymore. I mean, technically, you are just not stretching it as much and still feeling just as full.

this is extremely stupid.. the stomach DOES shrink in the sense that it is already stretched to various amounts in your everyday from regularly eating. when you dont eat, it shrinks down to its default size. What they're trying to say is that if the stomach is not stretched at all, then eating less wont shrink it.

I was 29.6 stone at 13-14 yes of age my belly touched my knees now I’m a health but I was at 8% bf I still had what looked liked a gut even though you can see my abs it’s crazy, do your intestines and stomach stay the same size ? Because that would explain the hanging gut. But guess I was blessed with no saggy skin
