Natural Gout Remedies

Editor-in-Chief Jessica Kellner answers the reader-submitted question "What are some natural remedies for gout?"
Gout is a very painful form of arthritis. It affects the joints where uric acid levels build up and can often lead to painful flair-ups in the affected joints. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to naturally manage gout. One of the first, and most important, is to manage your weight. Excess weight is a definite risk factor for gout. If you have a few extra pounds that you could lose, while staying at a healthy weight, we recommend starting there to reduce the risk of gout attacks.
Secondly, stay hydrated. Dehydration is horrible for gout, and doctors often recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces per day. You should also avoid alcohol (particularly beer) as well as meats rich in purine, including organ meats, salmon and other fish products. Doctors used to recommend avoiding purine-rich vegetables, too, but recent studies have found they don't have a negative impact on gout. Eating a plant-based diet is your best option.
Finally, there are a couple of supplements you can try. Alfalfa is one of the most frequently recommended ones. Take it as a supplement or add it to your diet. Tart cherry is another great option. Take it as a supplement or drink it as a juice, making sure what you drink is actual tart cherry juice without sugar.
