Anyone wanting actual advice:

HEAT your foot, never ice it. The reason crystals deposit in the big toe and ankle is b/c of how far away it is from the heart/core of your body, and gout almost always happens at night when your body temperature drops. Core stays warmer than your feet.

So never ever ice your foot, as icing can also help CRYSTALIZE the uric acid faster. Its counter intuitive, but dunk that foot in as hot as a water as you can handle 30 min at a time. Use common sense, don't burn yourself. Drink LOTS of water, but try not to exceed 5-6L a day, otherwise you're just making your kidneys work overtime. You can try to drink water w/ a small amount of baking soda mixed in (1/2 teaspoon to 250mL of water) in order to make your blood more basic on the pH scale, a theory that it will somewhat neutralize the uric acid. But there is no scientific evidence that shows this works, its anecdotal. I'm only adding it here in case it works for you.

Ignore the online sites saying eat fruit. Fruit has fructose which converts to Uric Acid. Its ok to have a small amount of fruit once every other day when you're having a flare up. avoid anything that has too much fruit sugar in it, yes, apples included (green apples are ok). Also start taking ascorbic acid (Vitamin C w/o fructose). Carrots, cabbage, and cucumbers should become your best friend. I know websites tell you "fructose from fruit is ok", it absolutely is not. 2 small mandarin oranges were enough to make my flare up get worst.

Although everyone says avoid red meat, if you look up the info online, the primary purine known as hypoxanthine is usually the culprit for gout/uric acid. Did you know that a chicken breast has MORE purines in it then some red meat? Use your brain when picking proteins, dont just read a list on google and think that's scripture, it isn't, its usually wrong IMO. Instead look up actual research papers. Eggs should also become your best friend during and after a gout flare up as they are one of the only proteins to have virtually zero purines.

As soon as you start feeling an attack coming, take Indomethacine 50mg (make sure to take with food, never take on empty stomach!), they expire pretty quick so if you're prone to attacks/flares, keep a fresh supply on hand just in case. This is one of the only drugs (NSAID) that has ever worked for me, and online anecdotal evidence seems to back that up. Takes up to 3-4 days to start feeling the affects so the sooner you take it, the better. You will need a prescription for this as they are not sold over the counter (at least not in Canada).

Once the swelling goes away and you're kind of back to normal, dont' go back to eating normally. Uric acid levels remain for up to 3 months after an attack, you're basically just straddling the line. So once the symptoms go away, keep eating healthy and avoid starchy carbs, refined sugar and fruit sugars, and metric ton of water a day.

Keep in mind getting a blood test to check Uric acid levels while you're having a flare up and right after is completely useless and will not tell you anything. Get your blood work done 3 months AFTER your attack and symptoms have completely gone away, this will give you a far better picture of whats actually in your blood. During an attack, most of that acid is in the form of crystals inside your joints, so its possible to get a test result back saying you have normal or low Uric acid levels; I know this b/c that's exactly what my blood work said when I went to the ER the first time I ever got gout, it was listed as 4.5 (6 being the level you get gout, and 5.5 being the upper range for normal humans), even the doctor said blood tests dont mean anything when it comes to gout during a flare up.

There are a lot of studies that show uric acid alone isn't what gives you gout. Some people have very elevated uric acid levels in their blood but don't get gout. Its certain foods that will trigger it when consumed over and over again in a given period of time. And everyone will have different triggers. But the research is pretty concrete: Sugar and refined carbohydrates. If you cut these two things out for a few months (I know, easier said than done, but what do you have to lose given how painful gout is?), you will become gout free. Then you can slowly reintroduce those two things BUT in limited amounts. This is the price we pay for treating our bodies like shit for years, but you will get used to it.

To anyone reading this that has a lot of fat on their body: Try 48 hour water fasting once a week, then once you're used to that, up it to 72 hour long water fasts. Make sure you take electrolytes (try to use the ones that don't use stevia or sugar of any kind, you want to limit insulin response while fasting, and yes stevia will do that too). Not only is this what got rid of gout permanently for me. It made me lose a ton of weight and cleared up some other health issues I was having. The first 18-30ish hours are going TO SUCK IF YOU'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE. Once you make it past that, trust me, its smooth sailing. And the motivation you get because of gout, let's just say its easier if you really want to do it as opposed to "have to do it".

It is INSANE how little food a human needs to survive day to day. I also have to add that if you're doing prolonged 72 hour fasts every week, please for the love of god go to the gym 4-5 days a week and weight train. It's the only way you'll keep your muscle mass instead of losing it due to nucleogenesis.

Read up on how insulin works and its myriad of trickle down effects in your body before you try fasting, and particularly how to lower insulin resistance by cutting out carbs and sugar and become fat adapted. Educate yourself first before taking such leaps. If you are vegan or vegetarian, then I can't help you, all I can say is avoid foods that are high in fructose/glucose and carbohydrates, whether complex or simple carbs, limit both.

I hope this helps someone out there.

edit to add: I noticed w/ my last gout flare up (which lasted almost a month....), after the first week, putting on wide size steel toe boots actually helped tremendously. The flex in a normal shoe puts too much strain on your toe and it'd hurt like fucking crazy taking a step w/ shoes on (esp b/c most shoes aren't wide by design to begin with, but also b/c of the flex).

It will hurt like crazy to get your foot into the boot initially, but once its in, take a deep breath and lace up. Give it 5 minutes then start taking some steps.

Over the course of the day the pain literally would disappear (other than the fact I could feel it was swollen, there was no pain). It'd return about 20 min after taking the boot off. I literally would not be able to go to work had I not learned this one trick. Please use common sense though, if it hurts too much then take off the boot and try again a few days later. Listen to your body, but also recognize that we as humans are resilient and can persevere a lot, your body will adjust accordingly.

Thank goodness I had a pair of wide steel toe boots handy, good luck to everyone else.

Thank you!!!!….after a week of excruciating pain I finally figured out it was gout. Had no idea who to go to for this. Medical doctors in my area are not too swift. I sure the will put me through many tests and then give typical advice, … which I’ve already read about, and didn’t really make sense to me. I’ve been a no wheat, no gluten, no dairy no sugar person for 20 years. Haven’t been taking care of myself so well lately. Not drinking enough water and eating too much chicken….. because I thought I needed to get more protein in my diet. Then I read that chicken is on the list of no no’s… along with a lot of other things that are “healthy”. Became very confused and you have straighten things out for me. Thank you so very much.!!!!

Please do more videos
on gout, Doc.
Your contributions are comprehensive and holistic,
and I appreciate that.
I told my family stress can trigger gout attacks but they did not believe me.
Most people point their fingers solely on bodyweight.
But gout is a complex situation.
The causes are varied.
Water therapy is the best preventative for most of us.

I have been having a pain from a rotator cuff injury in my shoulder during the winter months, which is arthritis pain. Started eating at least a half cup per day. Within a month, almost NO PAIN! My mom has arthritis in her back and started eating the sweet frozen cherries every day. Within a week she was nothing a difference and within a month she rarely uses the cane !! Absolute miracle 👏

God Bless You!!! I was suffering from burning feet (both) 24/7 for months! My feet had swollen to double their size. I couldn't sleep! I couldn't put my shoes on! 😩. My VA doctors didn't have a clue. They told me to prepare for possible amputation. Then one day I stumbled on your YT! I immediately put a 1/2 teaspoon of good old Baking Soda in a glass of Water. 1 hour later NO MORE BURNING! A Miracle had happened! The next morning my feet were Normal Size! Bless You Dr Kim. Bless You

Best video Ive ever seen on gout. Wish all doctors explained things so easy to understand. He doesn't waffle, just gets on with it. And holds ones interest. As soon as he mentioned tart cherries I was hooked. I learned about the concentrated tart cherry juice some years ago when I first experienced gout. My GP prescribed colchisine but they disagreed with me so I threw them away, researched holistic, found cherries and Hey Presto Cleared it up almost immediately and Ive only had it once since then. its been a great favourite with me. Although Im not averse to learning about other holistic remedies.
Thank you dr Kim
