Homemade Country Sausage Gravy

1 pound sausage
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups whole milk
3/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

In a large skillet over medium -high heat, brown the
sausage, chopping it into small chunks as it fries.
Once it is no longer pink, reduce the heat to medium- low and sprinkle in about half the flour.

Stir well until flour is absorbed by the sausage and grease. Repeat with the rest of the flour. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes.

Pour in about half the milk and stir well. Add the rest of the milk, stirring constantly. Cook the gravy, stirring constantly, until it thickens for about 10 minutes. Sprinkle in the seasoned salt and pepper and continue stirring until it is to the thickness you prefer. If it becomes too thick, add another 1/4 to 1/2 cup of whole milk.

I taught myself how to make gravy many moons ago. I was still in my youth. Once I learned how it was made I make it all the time with all sorts of juices (mostly meat in nature). The roux was the hardest to grasp, but when I did, it was on then...lol

Making gravy is something every cook should know how to do. It is so delicious. There are many kinds of gravy with very simple tweeks to your recipe. So good. And you young and new cooks should know that a good gravy can really improve (or even save) a just ok meal. No one will know the gravy was a last minute "save the day" decision. Any grease, sausage, bacon, grease or oil used in cooking meats, shortening, butter, margarine even cooking oil can be used to make gravy - even at the last minute. Over time you'll learn a few tricks of using various liquids vs just water to add flavor quickly. Milk is often very good on its own but if your grease was plain even bouillon made from cubes or granules can go a long way. Whether gravy is planned or a last minute decision. People will just know what a great cook you are. Tom is a great teacher. He makes it look easy. And it is!

I learned from my dad when I was growing up. He made sausage gravy, hamburger gravy, and creamed chipped gravy, the same way do. As a kid, we ate the gravies at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, on mostly mashed potatoes, or toast, SOS (my dad was in the Air Force). I used to fix it for my daughters, and hope the learned it from me! Thanks, Tom & Melissa for including this recipe!❤😊

I grew up on chipped beef gravy my Dad made for us, love it. He used bacon grease and browned the flour, it was a brown gravy, no milk in it, he used water or beef stock. I fix it once in a blue moon now.

This gravy and biscuits is the best. Learned from my mom and she just did it by eye. If we didn’t have biscuits we’d put it on bread. Yum.

Until I saw your video, I would cook the sausage first and set aside, then I would mix the fat and flour to make a roux, then add milk until it became the consistency we like. I'd add the sausage back in and warm through. Now I add the flour to the sausage as you did, and I like your method so much better. Thank you!

My wife learned to make sausage gravy very similar to your gravy from her Grandpa. Going to have to try the season salt. Thanks for sharing.

Great Video! We have been hosting Christmas breakfast for 20 years and after seeing your video on Christmas Eve, we decided to make this gravy! It was a hit and so delicious. I am one of those "scared to make gravy" folks and now I realize how easy it is. Thank you for the video - keep them coming! 🎄🎀

Oh wow, what a find! The pre-preparation was great; you prepared it with simple step-by-step instructions, and the plating was gorgeous. You made our mouths water the whole time through. You are a great Chef, and thank you, Melissa, for the beautiful camera work. We are interconnected; like #59, our comment is here, and we will be back for more. Your new friends, Sonja and Christopher, are from the Pacific Northwest in Oregon.
