Been making this my whole life. My way is adding granulated garlic to the sausage before I add the flour and brown that garlic to the sausage. Then I brown the flour to the sausage as well before adding the milk. It adds a toasty nuttiness if you brown the garlic and flour before the milk. IMO sausage gravy should not be white, it should be a tan color.

Tip: patty up the sausage prior to browning and it will have a great even brown on all sides
