Sausage Gravy
RECIPE COURTESY OF REE DRUMMOND
Level: Easy
Total: 25 min
Active: 25 min
Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

1 pound breakfast sausage, hot or mild
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3 to 4 cups whole milk, more to taste
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper, more to taste
Biscuits, warmed, for serving

Directions

With your finger, tear small pieces of sausage and add them in a single layer to a large heavy skillet. Brown the sausage over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle on half the flour and stir so that the sausage soaks it all up, then add more little by little. Stir it around and cook it for another minute or so, then pour in the milk, stirring constantly.

Cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens. (This may take a good 10 to 12 minutes.) Sprinkle in the seasoned salt and pepper and continue cooking until very thick and luscious. If it gets too thick too soon, just splash in another 1/2 cup of milk or more if needed. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

Spoon the sausage gravy over warm biscuits and serve immediately!

I can make a batch of this gravy last for multiple meals. When I was young and poor, I would extend it by reheating with more milk, pepper and a little extra butter. Still one of my favorite meals, 2nd only to grilled cheese and tomato soup!

Thank you. Gravy has been part of our family thanksgiving tradition for 50 years. Our two gravy masters, my mother-in-law, and my daughter have both left this world for their heavenly home. Neither one left us a "recipe" or or instructions on how to make it. Today following your directions I made my first test batch of sausage gravy in preparation for thanksgiving 2022. It was far easier than I thought it would be and not bad for a rank amateur. Thank you and may God bless you as He has blessed us through you, especially this year.

I love making sausage gravy. I drain the sausage grease and stir in flour, add a little beef broth and let it reduce. Then add whole milk, salt, pepper, a pinch of onion, sugar, and coriander. Serve it over honey butter biscuits and a fried egg.. Best breakfast ever.

Just made this and instead of flour I used McCormicks Country Gravy Mix. I'm storing it in the fridge for tomorrow's breakfast with biscuits and omelettes. I used heavy cream, buttermilk and a little water. It tastes divine. Thank you Ree!

Wow, everyone misses the minced fresh onions, big, huge increase in flavor, that's how I did it in the military and they cleaned the pan right up.

If you don’t like this gravy because of its strong pepper spicy flavor, try adding little pieces of square ham too and a touch of fresh Italian parsley. It makes it balanced and amazing.

I tried this method using 4 cups of unsweetened almond milk and 1\2 cup of heavy whipping cream. It turned out perfect. I wouldve used whole milk but didnt have any. 💠💠💠
