In this episode, I discuss a medication known as Ritalin (methylphenidate) and go over 3 things that you should know about it:

1. Some common side effects that you can watch out like like a decrease in appetite or weight loss. You could experience anxiety (8%) or depression (4%) as well.
2. I discuss a Black Box warning concerning dependence with methylphenidate.
3. I go over some situations in which you would not be able to use methylphenidate (contraindications). One example is marked anxiety or agitation as Ritalin my increase these symptoms.

My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.

Been on ritalin for 3 years for my adult adhd and despite the Rollercoaster journey to learning about handling it carefully, ritalin has drastically improved my life. Ofcourse like any other medicine, ritalin isn't for everyone nor should it be used carelessly yet like I learnt from DrugTalk, if you respect the drug and your body - both will help you otherwise they might work in ways that might endanger you as well.

A small bit of info: I'm a 68-year-old male. I'm already on Welbutrin, Lamictal, and Trintillex. My "problem" is I can't seem to get motivated enough to do things (housekeeping, etc.) I was prescribed Ritalin today by my psychiatrist. I've not received the prescription yet, but after reading some of these comments, it's already scaring the crap out of me. My appetite comes and goes for now, but I'm not really interested in not eating. I'm also concerned about the addiction dependency this drug might give me.
She's starting me out on only 10 mg.

My only question. Is it common to not only lose your appetite, but for food to appear intolerably disgusting by any chance? Like for example, I used to like eggs, but on Ritalin, I can't even stand the smell, and I have to sit in another room. And because I don't have much of an appetite, forcing myself to eat just makes me feel sick. Other than that, it works really well. But as for these side Normal or could it just be something else ?

THIS SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MORE!!
Thankyou I was perscribed Ritalin at the age of 6 for 10 years at the time, and I gradually got psychosis over time. I had no clue what was going on and later found out how/what caused it
marijuana cured it strangely enough cus it can cause psychosis as well but I’ve never had any symptoms from it thankfully and it helps my adhd as well as a whole range of other things
I still have a hard time eating 8 years after stopping Ritalin
This shouldn’t be perscribed to kids, it’s quite criminal

Sir, I'm sincerely disappointed. Why you haven't mentioned anything positive? Like patients with ADHD using it would drastically improve their life. From below average student become one of the very best. Is it worth mentioning Sir. I'm studying at 2 Universities and couldn't be able to do it otherwise. Respectfully. Gabriel

I started to actually understand what I am learning before I was reading and re-reading multiple times and then just leave it... now I am functional and it doesn't change anything in me except I don't really forgetting to pick up kids from school and get on time with appointments and just do stuff from start to finish

Once you are depend on it it means that your new lifestyle has improved and there’s nothing wrong being dependent on it .

I would add that some people are experiencing neuropathy after long -term use. Has something to do with vasoconstriction. People tend to add stimulants when they are already on others, like sugar, coffee, and nicotine. Take care of your heart health!

I'm only using it for 3 days but it feels like a crowd of loud kids left my head allowing me to finally think straight. Also, it feels time runs more slowly. Is that normal?

Even though I already knew all of this, I would like to commend you for taking the time to post this because you just mentioned three things that barely anyone talks about regarding this medication…

I also have a question regarding glaucoma: could continuously experiencing increased pressure in the eyes (sometimes a single eye, sometimes both eyes) after taking Ritalin for a few weeks indicate an early stage of glaucoma, in the absence of abnormal intraocular pressure readings?
