It was a fateful day, August 27, 1990, when an unimaginable tragedy took place at East Troy, Wisconsin. The world was still buzzing with excitement and admiration after witnessing an electrifying concert at the Alpine Valley Festival that featured legendary performers such as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and the immensely talented Vaughan brothers, Jimmie and Stevie Ray.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was no stranger to the music world. Born on October 3, 1954 in Dallas, Texas, he became inspired by music at an early age, especially by the guitar playing of his older brother Jimmie. Even before he reached puberty, Stevie had taught himself to play guitar.

During his high school years, Vaughan stayed up at night playing guitar at clubs in Deep Ellum in Dallas. He recorded a song for Stax Records in 1969 with a local band. In his sophomore year, he enrolled in an experimental arts program at Southern Methodist University specifically for talented high school students in the field of art. However, the program could not motivate him to stay in school.

I remember exactly where I was when this happened. I met Stevie twice. He was kind, a bit shy and had the strongest handshake I’ve ever felt. I miss SRV forever! ♥️🙏🏼💔

I was there, I literally walked past the helicopters on my way to my car. It was a week after my mother died and my sister and I went both nights to lift our spirits. I remember the initial radio reports, everyone thought it was Clapton that went down. I still have the recording of his final song ever, a 14+ minute version of Sweet Home Chicago, with Jimmy Lee, Eric Claption, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy

The real cause of this accident is that the pilot flew into IFR conditions without being certified or trained adequately. This is what also killed Kobe Bryant's group and Buddy Holly's entourage. Helicopters are more dangerous than planes because they have so many single failure points. One nut comes loose and your going down, but taking off in fog at night in a hilly area without instrument training is virtual suicide. The pilot killed SRV through his incompetence. Before flying in bad weather with any pilot, make sure he is IFR qualified before taking off, and if in any doubt, don't go with him. You'll live longer.

Stevie Ray was really such a legend, and who knows what he could have done if he lived for longer. Very tragic about how simple it can be to have your life snuffed out, even when you accomplish that much.

Stevie helped make blues rock cool again in the 80's, in a time of synthesized New Wave and garish glam metal. He is sorely missed.

I got to see Stevie with Dire Straits on the Brothers in Arms tour and he was absolutely amazing. It was very sad when he died at such a young age.I am very thankful that I got to see Stevie live.

I felt like someone had ripped my heart out the day he died..I watched him and Albert Collins play to a small crowd on the Riverboat President in New Orleans m before he became famous and I was absolutely blown away..he played with such intensity and passion I recall seeing the sweat literally streaming from the tip of his nose and afterwards he mingled with the crowd and I got to shake his hand and he thanked me for coming..just a humble nice guy despite being a musical genius and guitar God.
RIP SRV.

I remember where I was and what I was doing when it came over the radio that Stevie had died. I cried my eyes out. He was great, and it saddens me to think of all the wonderful music he would have played for us had he lived longer. He will always be missed. ❤

A simple twist of fate and a few seconds took SRV the living legend guitarist out of life when he was peaking both personally and professionally. A true "crying" shame for everyone who loved him. He didn't deserve it. As his song says, "Life by the drop". He lived it to the fullest it seems, we all wish he had gotten more time. Ride high in heaven, Stevie.

I met Stevie Ray Vaughn at an A.A. meeting a week or two before he died. The meeting name was "Midtown" and was held in a large church basement in D.C. It was a speaker meeting so I didn't hear him share or anything. I had been clean and sober for about two and a half months - it's been 33 years now. Afterwards he was swarmed by a whole bunch of people really excited to meet him. He seemed to me to be the coolest dude. Couldn't believe it when I heard his helicopter crashed. Rest in peace.

Stevie played JJ’s blues bar in FtWorth a lot. 1 night I went & when they took a break he came over & asked me if I was enjoying the show with the biggest smile on his face.🥰 He had just found faith in the Lord.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to see Stevie live three times, I have seen many great musicians over 50 years, but Stevie live was absolutely mesmerizing.

Anyone, who is a 'self-taught' musician, has their own unique style. And can never be topped. Stevie Ray Vaughn was in a league all his own. He played the guitar effortlessly.
