On October 12, 1997, John Denver couldn't contain his excitement to fly his newly acquired toy. But at 5:28 PM, something went terribly wrong. Eyewitnesses on the ground saw the plane flying about 500 feet above them when it sharply tilted to the right and went into a nose dive.

John Denver was an American folk singer and songwriter. He is known for popularizing acoustic folk music in the 1970s and had numerous hits including "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High."

He'd be 80 now. In the 1970s he was everywhere on tv, universally loved. Sunny, bright, uplifting.

I went to school with John and my father and his were I'm also from a military family. We met up years later to talk about old times, and the one day I had off from work, my coworker had heard the news and called me. Sometimes I'm still in disbelief that he's gone. I miss him everyday, he was gone to soon, and it was because of him sixteen years before he died that I got my own pilots license. He was a good friend. 😢

In my 20s I saw him live in Sydney, Australia. With no musical instruments, he projected his powerful, unique vocals across the air, hypnotising the audience, myself included. No-one moved, hardly breathed. It was a magical moment in time that will never leave my memory.

Rest in peace, John. You left behind a legacy of millions of grateful fans who love your music & will never forget you. " For I have slipped the surley bonds of earth, put out my hand & touched the face of God." Fly high like the eagle in the skies.

John was a friend of mine. He was part of the HumanDolphin foundation, with Dr. John Lily, where I worked, at Marine World/Africa USA, CA. Someone I grew up with, cooked for him several times during mountain treks. In 1988 he played at the Western Washington fairgrounds in Puyallup, because I asked him to. It was just a Podunk place I’d grown up in. I jokingly asked him if he would play there, and he said yes…and he did! He was like that: Giving. Caring. He was also was a kind, humble, idealist. He was flying an experimental plane the day he died. The fuel tank switchover valve was placed behind him - yes, you cover it well. It was a terrible, tragic loss of a great human being. I hold dear to my heart, all he left behind. My son is now a pilot. Named John.

My children grew up in the seventies, and hearing John’s music every where was the best part of our lives. I have a taped recording of my now 49 yr old son singing Country Roads when he was about 3 yrs old. I will treasure it always. John will always be loved and missed by this family.

I was just at the memorial spot in Pacific Grove, California, right by the water…it’s a boulder with a cast bronze plaque on it. People leave small stones on the top of the boulder. What a beautiful place the Monterey Peninsula is. It’s hard to imagine such a tragic event happening there. Whales, dolphins and orca can sometimes be seen passing by from the shore, as it is a marine sanctuary. A very sad day when he died, a huge loss of a very special person. He had extraordinary talent. RIP John 💔😢

I worked for a Jeep dealership in Glenwood Springs, CO and occasionally we'd work on some of Johns vehicles. One of my duties was to deliver customer's vehicles to Vail/Aspen/Rifle etc. I remember delivering his Jeep Wagoneer to his house in Starwood in Aspen. Even though I never met him I'll always remember the experience.

I was involved in the Opening of the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1983. John Denver was one of the main acts for the opening. We watched him rehearse and also the main event on the Sunday night. What a wonderful performer.
