On December 10, 1967, American singer-songwriter Otis Redding and 5 members of his band, the Bar-Kays climbed aboard a twin-engine Beechcraft H18, which Otis had recently bought. As they approached Truax Field in Madison, just 4 miles from their destination, everything seemed to be going smoothly, and at 3:25 pm, the pilot radioed for permission to land. However, shortly after, tragedy struck.

People tend to be unaware that Otis Redding wrote, recorded, and had a hit with “Respect” before Aretha Franklin’s version came along and took all the glory of the song with her.

Otis Redding Jr. Gone at 26 in a plane crash, but left us so much beautiful music behind. "These arms of mine", "try a little tenderness", "sittin on the dock of the bay", "come to me", "that's how strong my love is", "gone again", "stand by me", "fool for you", "you left the water running", "I've been loving you too long", "there goes my baby", "rememeber me", "send me some lovin", "I've got dreams to remember... And more

As a Canadian who grew up on classic rock, I'll never forget hearing the big O's voice for the first time. It saved my life and opened my ears to soul music. Long live the true king of soul, Otis Redding.

Thank you for making this video

I live in Macon and was the next door neighbor of Otis’s son, Otis III, for years. Several years back, I ended up homeless and Otis helped get me off the street. He passed away not too long ago, but I will be forever grateful.

I wouldn't trust those little planes or helicopters.

Don’t play with life. James brown warned him. The weather was bad that day. He still went. Sometimes you cannot bend life to your will.

I always thought he was much older. He had a very matured look.

Otis was a man ahead of his time and a great talent. From 1969-71 a string of musicians died in plane crashes at the age of 27, Otis was 26 and died in December 67 — a man ahead of his times and truly missed, just think what beautiful music he would have made for us

The post recovery photos of Otis, still strapped to the seat he died in, are so sad. I hope they all lost consciousness as soon as they hit the water. Love him. Wonderfully talented man. 🙏💖

Man, I love Otis Redding. When I hear "Pain in My Heart", I feel his pain. So talented and soulful.

I was born over 20 years after Otis died; and he is still my all time favorite singer. He accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. By today’s standards he was still just a kid, so much talent and potential gone far too soon. RIP King

My sons are now 26 and 23. Neither one of them have children yet, but Otis was a father and a husband by 26. Cool 😎. Bless his memory and h8s family. 💐

Poor Otis. He didn't want to let his fans down. 😢 What a shame. Gone too soon.
