Determinants of vitamin D deficiency in the UK (Clinical Nutrition)

University of South Australia (16th December)

Using UK Biobank data

Severe vitamin D deficiency remains an issue throughout the UK

Cross-ethnic analyses on the prevalence and determinants of vitamin D deficiency

25(OH)D equal to or less than 25 nmol/L Calcifediol

10 ng/ml

Data from 440,581 UK Biobank participants

415,903 identified as White European

7,880 Asian

7,602 Black African

1,383 Chinese

6,473 of mixed ancestry

Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency

Asian ancestry

57.2% in winter or spring

50.8% in summer or autumn

Black African ancestry

38.5% in winter and spring

30.8% in summer or autumn

Mixed ancestry

36.5% in winter and spring

22.5% in summer or autumn

Chinese ancestry

33.1% in winter and spring

20.7% in summer or autumn

White European ancestry

17.5% in winter and spring

5.9% in summer or autumn

Participants with higher socioeconomic deprivation

More likely to have 25(OH)D deficiency compared to less deprived participants (P = less than 1 × 10 −300)

This pattern was more apparent among those of White European ancestry

Regular consumption of oily fish was associated with reduced odds of vitamin D deficiency across all ethnicities

Asians are less likely to eat fish or use vitamin D supplements compared to other ethnicities

Outdoor-time in summer was less effective for Black Africans than White Europeans

Other risk factors

Living further north

Indoor employment

Computer time and games

Professor Elina Hypponen (SA)

The severity of vitamin D deficiency is concerning

especially with the high rates of COVID-19 infections in Europe and elsewhere in the northern hemisphere this winter

Clinical trials have shown that vitamin D supplements are beneficial in the prevention of respiratory infections and even mortality

Vitamin D is not expensive and the doses which have shown the greatest benefits are those that we can all acquire over the counter from the local pharmacy

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, now is really the time for all who may be affected to take action

Good afternoon John. You must feel like your'e banging your head against a wall with the messaging about Vit-D but take consolation that you have informed at least 826 thousand folks around the world along with their families and friends. I'm just one subscriber but have at least ten of my kin now taking supplement Vit-D because of your messaging earlier in the year. We thank you most sincerely for it.
Keep banging Doc, maybe one day government health departments will take notice.
Keep well friend!

Myself and my elderly mother have just recovered from covid. She was symptomatic first and I became symptomatic after spending 3 days isolating in the same house as her. Both of us were taking 9000 IU Vitamin D, 500mg quercetin, 1200mg NAC, 30mg elemental zinc, 1000mg Vitamin C, 400mcg Selenium and fish oils before and throughout. We both had a single day of fever and muscle aches before the inflammation / cytokines calmed down and we recovered. Our first and last symptom were 7 days apart. Supplementation works!

This morning I heard the same line about more research is needed on the local news. I thank you for being straight with us from the beginning. I don't know what we would do without you, Dr. Campbell!

I've been taking vitamin D supplements since march. Who else has?

I remember about twenty years ago reading papers that said that vitamin D deficiency was common and made people prone to respiratory infections.

Well done Dr Campbell, my family and I are taking our daily Vitamin D supplements. All thanks to you. I have been reminding friends and family to take theirs too.

I take 5, 000iu of Vitamin D, a multivitamin, a probiotic, and fish oil daily. I also exercise regularly, try to sleep 7+ hours a night, and eat as healthy as I can. Haven't been sick in years. Hope everyone stays safe❤

I have asthma, multiple mental illnesses, insomnia, and chronic stress. All of these can negatively impact my immune system, so I do the best I can to stay healthy. 🤧

Dr Campbell, I have been following your channel every day from january. Thank you so much for all your work. My family and I (14 persons) in Antwerp Belgium have been taken vitamine D and zinc since february and we are wearing masks long before it was official advice, thanks to you. Belgium has been the hardest hit by Covid but no one of our family has tested positive so far. Not even my parents who are 74 y old, they are obese and have diabetes.

There is no money in vitamin D research which is why it is not being done as much as it should

YOU Sir are second to none. Kudos and my hats off to you.
This issue is of utmost concern for me. It is the one issue with this CV thing that makes me wonder what's really going on!

Dr John Campbell is brilliant....I share his astonishment and anger at the ineptitude of the scientific and political establishment regarding Vit D.

Thanks so much for all you do, including the download demo. I am a "technology deficient" elder and you have saved me a lot of time!

My parents are nearing eighty, glad I could convince them to take Vitamin D and Zinc regularly in this pandemic, lowering the risk a bit. I take it too, of course. Thanks for this (as usual) very helpful information.

The older you are the more D3 you need as our bodies become less efficient at converting it. I'm 64 and I take 5, 000 iu to stay in the optimal range.

Great video as always. You don't want to rant about what has been said regarding Vit.D on your channel. Personally I think you should be on prime time TV news channels putting the point across. Kep up the excellent work your are doing. Thank you

Back in your early recommendations I went out and bought everyone in the family a huge bottle of vitamin D from Costco and gave them each their own bottle and said take these they will save your life because Dr. Campbell said so!
