You can gain muscle and lose fat in a calorie deficit. Calories in calories out are just the formula for weight gain or loss. You can do things to make protein go to muscle building and if you have an energy deficit your body will tap into fat reserves. I am currently gaining weight (calorie surplus) yet I am losing fat and gaining muscle. Eat very high protein and lift weights daily and you have the foundations. I use many smaller tricks from there. Nutrition partitioning is separate from calories and weight though they impact each other.

If your over 20% by you can easily body re-comp. The muscle you build will require more calories which will burn your fat

For normal dudes, not bodybuilders or strength athletes, I would say time is your friend. Aim to lose 1-2lbs fat MONTHLY and gain 1-2 lbs of muscle MONTHLY. that's it. I know that's slow but after a year two you will definitely look and feel better. I lost 30 lbs over two years 200->170 and just stayed consistent with diet and fitness and each week/month things gradually improved. I didn't weigh myself daily, that's annoying and became a negative mental cycle for me.

The answer was ok, but you forgot to add that a higher percentage of your caloric intake should consist of protein if your goal is to build muscle without putting on fat. Don't need much of a caloric surplus if you increase that ratio of protein calories and of course work out regularly to make your muscles activate the synthesis.

He was talking about the situation where you are in a surplus and gaining strength but not size, what is the recommendation for those in this boat in order to put on more size?

"What is your fitness base?" I see this question (build muscle/no fat) when people are not consistent in their training and are "looking to get more" serious. You have to have some fitness in order to change your shape/strength etc. Show me your 90-120 training log and this is a pretty EZ question to tackle. I see a number of people who want to diet/exercise without any perspective on either one.

Hello guys I need some help, so I weighed myself 7 weeks ago, I was like 145lbs ish, stayed consistent with lifts, eating regularly etc and made progress and my bodies feeling stronger and looking more muscly, but I just weighed myself and I’m still 145lbs ish… I mean. I suppose this is a good thing cos I’ve been skinny fat for a while, and worked out my maintenance of eating now I guess. So maybe I should add 1 more meal into my routine. Also I was thinking to start taking creatine? But I’m not sure. Only been training consistently 3 months.

Jesus christ, your arms look like Arnold's. But after he retired when he was at his 60's...
It looks odd. You are young.

Should you take a break from the gym or just train 52 weeks a year?
