Common Adolescent Hip & Groin Pain, Can Lead to Emergency Surgery! Must See SCFE

Bob and Brad discuss hip and groin pain, specifically SCFE (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis) and how it can be misdiagnosed. This hip condition occurs in teens and pre-teens. The symtoms are vague groin/hip pain and constant limp with walking. Please note, this is not very common but it can be very important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing these symptoms.

SCFE sufferer here. Dual screw pins in both hips at 12 years old. My theory is that it can happen in kids with aggressive growth spurts in early puberty. I went from 5'3 to 5'9" in less than a year when i was stricken with SCFE. Main offender was my right hip. My SCFE was slow to form, not from trauma.

They also found my left one just starting to slip when my right one had already slipped partially and was causing me pain and a noticeable limp. The corrective surgery fixed it and i healed fairly quickly. I was lucky to have caught it early and also lucky to have a proficient orthopedic doctor surgeon.

However, i did NOT have the proper physical therapy, post op. I was sent home a day after surgery with no recommendations for follow up care. I went through my teens and twenties with a dysfunctional gait that led to sleeping glute syndrome and a weak core. Now i have back problems from living with lower cross syndrome without realizing it until it was too late. I'm 32 now with arthritic hips and a limited range of motion. Screws are still in there.

For the parents out there of SCFE kids, PLEASE stress the need for post op physical therapy to your doctors and insurers. Your kids need to be taught how to use their hip and glute muscles properly! Or they will lay dormant until spine issues start showing up! Also be on the lookout for leg length disparity. If one leg is just as little as half an inch shorter than the other, your kid can get scoliosis later in life. I also didn't know this until it was too late.

This happened to my son, and his pain was misdiagnosed. It got so bad he was walking with a limp. One day, he fell, and then it became an emergency situation. He needed surgery and a screw was used to repair it. He was 14 years old, at the time. Now he is 22, and fine, although he does have occasional pain if he was extremely active that day. He also has difficulty doing such things that require certain movement of the hip, such as mounting a horse. He can also only ride a horse that is narrow, or it will cause hip pain.

Daughter had bilateral SCFE at age 11 -- not overweight, just probably in a growth issue. Ped Doc misdiagnosed after seeing her twice. She showed obvious symptoms: limping for over 2 weeks, referred knee pain (you didn't mention that in your video). One hip broke, was pinned, and developed avascular necrosis. Second hip broke 9 months later. Crutches and a wheelchair off an on for 7 years. She had a horrible limp. Went through 6 surgeries -- one of the major ones was an osteotomy -- I strongly recommend against that one -- and at age 18 I begged for a hip replacement in that first broken hip that made her limp. No problem -- she went off to college with a normal gait for the the first time since she was 11 years old! She's in her early thirties now and has occasional back issues but overall she's normal. She's not allowed to run. But she is active, a normal weight and living a large life. I cannot emphasize this enough -- take your child to a Pediatric Orthopedic doctor, hopefully near a children's hospital. Don't rely on adult Orthopedics for this condition. Also, children's hospitals are just less scary and child-centric. Everything that happened could have been avoided with an X-Ray. Push your Pediatrician for an X-Ray if your child shows these symptoms.

My story is the same as the patient even duken to bring forced to run in gym class after two months of suffering. My parents and gym teacher thought I was faking. Fortunately my grandparents came to pick me up to spend the weekend with them and the only way I could out of the house and into their car was army crawling on the ground. I could not walk. They didn't think I was faking and took me to the doctors, and emergency surgery the next day. Then two weeks later emergency surgery on the other hip( that was fine) but slipped in the two no weight bearing weeks after surgery. I am still dealing with the trauma from that experience almost 30 years later.

I was diagnosed with SCFE after a whole year of being misdiagnosed. My parents thought I was seeking attention because I insisted I needed crutches. Eventually I collapsed in pe class so they gave in and found a doctor. They took x-rays and said I had a severe case of SCFE. They scheduled surgery that day. Today I still have issues with my leg. Stiffness in the morning, can’t sit cross applesauce, and my left leg is 2 1/2 inches shorter than the other. I wish I was diagnosed earlier. The surgeon said all these issues would have been avoided if I had been helped sooner.

I had this surgery but my parents did not take me to physical therapy. Does anyone have any tips to help? I have limited motion in my hips and I’ve been looking for answers for ages.

My son had that and had surgery that fused his hip. That was when he was 13. He's in his 40s now and had his hip replaced. His leg is still shorter than the other.

I had this at age 12. It was misdiagnosed initially. Then I had emergency surgery.

An inversion table would be a great investment to reduce the risk of not only this disease, but as well as many pains associated with... growing

More niche group, but do you all have advice for Ehler's danlos patients? I have it and know what works for me, but my teen daughters presentation is different. She constantly, daily, has hip slipping and shoulder. Along w having slipping rib syndrome. Repeatedly reaching under then to pull ribs out. Lumbar spine fused along w ribs being fused to spine wrong. Scoliosis as well. Small town physical therapy no help. Big city wanted to give drugs.

How about a 52-year-old whom had a groin pain and hip pain ended up being a 1 year old low gut or upper nut hernia took 2 days to diagnose. After surgery has massive nerve pain, hard to sit, walk, etc. Keeps having bursa problems with it and is worried that the air pumped in caused it. Thoughts? Doctors are baffled? . Suggestions?
