I think this is a matter that is different to every person. One of the holiest men i knew was a chaplain in the Army when I served
He cursed, smoked, and would have the occasional beer with the guys...however i saw him lead countless men to God, and I listened to some of the most powerful sermons and teachings from that man, than i ever have from anyone else.
I think that anyone who says if you use cuss words it makes you less a Christian, or puts Christians in a bad light, should worry more about their own compass, and let me walk my journey with God in the manner that i feel most comfortable with..
Im not saying you are being judgemental, as you said it is how you feel, but i know many "Christians" who judge others based in such topics..
My heart is where it needs to be, I believe, i pray, i work for God and God works through me. I strive to be a better man today than I was yesterday, and I do so through what God puts in my heart ..cuss words or not..no man can take that from me

What makes a curse a curse? And what makes a bad word a bad word?
