"Most small business owners fear having to fire an employee. But the truth is, the only thing worst than firing an employee is keeping a bad employee for far too long" so true!!

I just fired an employee who had a terrible attitude and sent a group text venting her anger. It was her 3rd strike. 4 times is generous but I’ve been in business for a long time. When I was younger I was much more forgiving and employees took advantage.

I'm the tender hearted business person. I run a bar and this video has helped me really prepare for firing an employee tomorrow. I'm super nervous but she has caused me to lose sleep and as for the while trait thing she is bar tender and has experience but she has a very bad attitude and how can you bar tender and keep customers happy if you have an attitude.

When you contemplate firing someone, and don't do it immediately, you'll usually find out later that you just postponed the inevitable.

Owners and managers need to remember our debt to the rest of the company, a bad employee is like a black hole that sucks resources and time from everyone else in the company.

All that said, be humane, offer constructive feedback on the reason(s) for their termination, and if remotely possible, even offer a reference.

Yes, a reference for someone you fired. More often than not you're firing someone for their weaknesses while still recognizing their strengths. Also, many times we recognize that the person would likely succeed in a different "type" of organization. Small business owners need people that are entrepreneurial and can be cross-trained, as we can't afford big overhead. Often times, people that don't make it in our companies, do very well in a rigid corporate environment where people have narrow and repetitive roles.

Remember, the goal in firing someone is to do what's best for your organization, your intention is not to hurt the person's feelings or their career.

Also, In 25 years, I've never challenged anyone's unemployment claim, I feel I owe them that much, as I was the one that made the bad decision to hire them, why should they suffer for my poor judgement?

Nice video Dave! Traits are definitely important when hiring/firing employees. Lots of times it's hard to let go of an employee! I hired my best friend and had to fire him when we started making mistakes. It was a hard decision but one I knew that was best for my business. Thanks for sharing Dave and excited to watch more content ! :)

Really good video. I think companies expect both traits and skills right away on day 1. So it's easiest if you've done the job 100 times before. If you don't hit the ground running, then you will likely be fired within a month.

I'm leaving my current job because of a bad employee that management has not gotten rid of yet. And the employee has been with the company for 8 years

If you are a business owner and you have bad employees please fire them. Bad employees hurt the rest of us who are trying to do a good job. Don't be a wuss.

I have employee who is taking too much unpaid vacations one week every month keep saying their mother is sick bla bla we all know it's not true but can't approve it, makes lots of mistakes at work and have bad attitude very drama queen.
Would that be legal enough to fire this person? It's part time job 14 hours a week but we provide free housing and free utilities.

Fretting about an employee for a long period is pointless. I would call them in and explain my concerns, then make it quite clear that they have a month or so to amend their ways or move on. In 90% of cases one or the other will happen and firing them can be avoided. In some cases, the employee who wants to keep his job will seek guidance from other staff and management and it can be a win/win situation. Needless to say, their will always be the odd idiot who requires stronger measures.

If an employee has physically threatened another employee, I would say that person needs to go.

What if an employee is really good at so many things, but has 1 specific weakness which they don’t know how to change (e.g. lack of attention to small details)!

This is precisely why more people should unionize. It provides a counter-balance to a terrible boss. Too many businesses treat their employees as just another expense that needs to be minimized. This guy seems to follow that school of thought.

I've hired and terminated a lot of people over the years and there is nothing I hated more than doing that. While it is important to document. Before I start doing any of I would always give an employee a shot across the bow "You're fucking up, you need to fix it. This is your freebie." When I supervised union employees I had no problem going to a shop steward directly and saying "you might want to talk to so and so about X. I haven't mentioned this to anyone but you. Something you can help with?" The steward usually had no problems fixing something minor really quick.
