Will Cardio Really Prevent You From Building Muscle?

Is cardio really as catabolic as we think and will it prevent you from building the muscle you want? I get to the bottom of this debate once and for all.

video. I have an idea for a video. What could be a good workout routine/plan for older guys (45-55)? Full body? Split? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Awesome tip Matt! I think the tip of the day is related to a theory called Parkinson’s Law, where a task will swell up in perceived value when the time to complete the task is shorter. 👍

Loving these daily uploads too! 💪

GREAT tip today - timely as I've been following a "program" that had lots of volume (4 or 5 sets 12 reps "to failure"). Only did it for a week and wondered why I was cheating myself on quality peak contraction, etc. It was because I knew I had a heck of a lot of sets and reps after and didn't want to burn myself out. Realize now that was a terrible thing to do. I think my sweet spot is actually 2 working sets - I really start to fall off after that. Thanks for the important reminder, Matt.

Hello! first of all I wanted to say that I love your videos, keep up the good work!
I would love to know your opinion/experience in isometric training (front/back lever, handstand, etc.) vs dynamic training (such as the pull up or the push up).

This is fantastic. I'm leaning out and I can't wait to start my strength training up. Been training for a half marathon the last 3 months.

To push swts as far as possible, Ive thought about if the "Massive Iron Rep Goal System" could work for progressive calistenics. Been on my mind for the longest time.

I realized that i am weak from the side ( obliques and glutes combined together ) I am disappointed, why. Maybe becuz i am seating so much.
I thought of using dumbbells when do lunges and add more athletic movements that work more muscle groups (core and glutes and shoulders ) in the same time *dynamically.*
*Can you make a video on this topic?* Thanks allot !

I enjoy running and have done 40 minutes a day of cardio for the past 7 years, but I am tired of being a scared to pick up heavy objects in everyday life so I want to get stronger. I already do some strength training but is usually 10 minutes of callisthenic supersets at the end of a workout 3 times a week. If you've got the time to answer, what would you recommend as I try to prioritize strength while minimizing loss of aerobic capacity? Is this sort of thing addressed in any of your books? I'll buy it. Also, I'm 25.

Thanks so much for what you do.

If you eat more to compensate for the calories burned from your cardio. You'll be good to go

Great video Matt ! On a different note, I know you eat a fairly clean diet, but do you take much interest in how much protein you consume ? I'm asking because I'm 6' 5 and around 235 pounds and the so called recommend intake is a gram per pound of body weight . And I really struggle to eat that much ?

Is some form of hardcore cardio important? Push ups and whatnot get ya breathing hard but do you sometime s need that extra umph in a workout? I appreciate the tips Matt!

How can you hit your back muscles effectively if you can’t do a pull-up or if you don’t have access to a bar consistently?

Endurance cardio/aerobics (only/primarily) being important to weight/fat loss is also a myth, opposite to yours, which just won't die. The former is largely embraced by females, and the latter (endurance cardio is bad for muscle building) by males.

Another ubiquitous mistake amongst fitness professionals and/or the general populace is using very specific sporting activity (e.g. rowing, basketball, tennis, battling rope, cycling, etc) as a general conditioning/training tool. The transferability of these specific activities to improvement of general conditioning is often inadequate - one may become proficient on a rowing machine, as an example, but cannot hold basic safe/optimal postures at rest or during exercise, or squat/stand on one leg competently. I'd posit that such industry-wide/population-wide mistake will never go away; the only variant would be the choice of specific exercises.

Keep up the good work!

Is running every second day and doing muscle building calisthenics every other second day a good idea?
