From this video you will learn how to maintain your Debian system and what you should NOT do.

To maintain healthy Debian follow these rules:

1. Install software only from Debian repositories and try to avoid installing software from random websites.
2. Do NOT combine Debian Stable with other Debian branches.
3. Do NOT use Ubuntu packages and repositories in Debian.
4. Do NOT install drivers using manufacturer install scripts.
5.Do NOT suffer from Shiny New Stuff Syndrome.
6. Be careful with removing software.
7. Be careful with installing software.
8. Do NOT blindly follow online tutorials.

If you have anything to add to these rules, please leave a comment. Everyone will appreciate it.

I would also discourage from removing any directory that is not located in the ~/home folder. Do not remove such important directories as "/root" or "/boot" or "/var". What would be pretty catastrophic, I would imagine. :$

The humility you exhibit in your videos is noticed and appreciated. Thanks and great job. Love your work.

I've been using Linux Mint 18 for past 7 months (my first linux distro) as my daily driver and I've always installed all additional programs system-wide with use of sudo make install. Fortunately nothing broke, but recently I've made transition to the Debian 9 stable (your review and guides played a major part in this transition ;) ), so now I will install everything the right way! Thank you! Best linux-oriented channel on YouTube! :D

Great video! I actually came across the article in the Debian WIki a few days ago just by accident, and it was quite helpful. I am glad that the material is now available in video format. Thanks, ALU! :)

Excellent points. I recently started using Debian stable. Added the backports repo and now I have the best of stability and not so old packages. Kernel is at 4.18.

Hi, can you please discuss about screen tearing issues in xfce (and other DEs probably, some have, some don't have)?
Hope you can consider this in your future video.

When I was using ubuntu, before I format about a week or two and switched to debian I was downloading programs from everying debian based ubuntu, mint linux, kali linux, debian and things worked ok for awhile until I woke up 1 week before my format and couldn't install anything and was frustrated and couldn't figure it out.

I practiced python in debian for fun and made a big mistake again, I broke my python install and tried to uninstall python while unintentially removing a bunch of system files at the same time .

My personal files were ok but it was a pain in the butt trying to get 1 gigabyte of system files without a desktop environment to make things okay again. ;_;

As an unexperienced Linux user I ask myself: why does orage have it's own package if xfce does need it and it apparently can't be used with another DE?

Just broke my system after creating a file .xsessionrc as you mentioned. Did everything exactly as you showed in 2:10 but i don't get that why i was couldn't be able to login with my password after creating that file which exports the path of the program we wanted to install. And also login failure was odd for me because when i wrote my password for login it behaves like going to login but in a short while with a quick flash of a black screen displays back the login screen again. Note that, currently using ligthDM GTK+ login manager and recovered the system after deleting file from bash.

I put precompiled binaries/AppImages etc in /opt.. I thought that's what I'm meant to do? I'm the only user on my system

Hi. I'm a new linux user. My debian is version 11 Bullseye. I want to install nomacs which is not available on Bullseye, but available on Buster.
If I want to install it properly, what should I do ?

When I started using linux, I thought you could just install as many desktop environments as you wanted and switch between them at will. Then I read somewhere that you can't install KDE with some other desktops (like Xfce, I think) because of all the applications installed by the DEs. You would make a mess of all the DEs. I'm not sure if this is all true or not but I haven't tried it.

Hi ALU,

Do you have any thoughts on upgrading kernel versions in Debian? My laptop is somewhat new - so I'm using the 5.9 kernel in my ubuntu system, though I'd like to switch to debian

thank you for your videos. I just installed debian (as my first distro, I know, I'm probably more stupid than brave ) and it helped me a lot.

Even though I know the basic commands, do you have recommendation for nice book to learn how to manage debian system properly?

thanks again,
Rami

1:33 In my opinion, I'd rather enable "show hidden files", then create a ".local" folder, and inside there, create a "bin" (binaries) folder, and drop the executable files there. The only application where I had to do that, was with Telegram Desktop.

Thank you, i`m new to Debian, i changed from Windows to Debian, and watching this video i did make some crazy stuff while using Debian, i`m installing again rs. You should make a Udemy course like to explain more technical stuff, like what is kernel, grub, etc, i don`t know many stuff about these things, i`m very ignorant about those things, i would definitely bought it! Thanks for all the videos ! And I like what you did with the Xfce interface, i`m going to try that one too!
