Overcoming Binge Eating through Mindfulness

Why do people binge eat? And how can you stop binge eating – without DOING so much work? With the holiday season kicking into gear and all the stresses it can bring, I wanted to offer a simple approach for those who struggle with stress eating, overeating, or binge eating:

If binge eating happens when we’re on autopilot, what would it look like to become AWARE of your binge eating?

So often we focus on DOING more to “fix” a problem that we have; DOING something to change our emotional eating or binge eating behavior. But through my own direct experience and working with clients, I’ve found what’s more important is learning how to BE with whatever’s happening.

When we’re on autopilot, behaviors happen automatically. But when we’re present, we can make CHOICES with conscious awareness. It’s a simple shift—from autopilot to awareness—but it’s by no means easy.

So this year, instead of stressing about holiday eating behaviors, I encourage you to get curious and see what it’s like to become aware. What if you don’t need to DO more about binge eating, but BE with it while it’s happening? Wishing you healthy and happy holiday season!

I lost my mom a few weeks ago and found myself binge eating everyday. I've been living alone since her passing. I gained around 20kgs not just since her passing but over the past few months since I stopped keto. My fiance cheated on me not too long ago to someone "fit" & "hot". I've been on such an emotional rollercoaster this year but glad to finally take the first step in going back to keto/lowcarb & fasting. I'm trying 💔

If you struggle with binge eating, have you explored the moment you become aware? Is it before, during, or after a binge? Share your experience in the comments and feel free to engage with others—with kindness, please!

Maybe I’m not paying attention to every feeling, but I find that sometimes even if my needs are met (other than hunger) and I’m feeling happy, I will still get the urge to binge.

Mine happens the second a opportunity appears for it to happen honestly that goes for eating off track the second a event or evening out arrives i start to mentally give myself excuses on how just this one meal is ok to cheat on my keto its so frustrating but so hard to overcome the food temptation its why i have struggled and never exceeded to get the weight off which i want more then anything sadly the addiction to food wipes out the mere though of my goal every time

It's definitely important to check in with yourself and be mindful when it comes to eating, but what I struggle with more is the desire to binge eat- it's not something I do subconsciously and kind of awaken to realize I've over-eaten, but more that I view food as comforting and often want to have a giant meal- or I guess what others might call a 'planned' binge. I'm trying to get past that desire.

Sorry but food is my enemy.
Period. I went from having a great relationship with food to gaining 20, 30, 40 up to 50lbs no matter what I did. I was diagnosed with VERY MILD hypothyroidism. I am in completely normal ranges, do 10k steps a day, workout 5-6days/wk for a minimum of 2 hrs, eating 1500 calories or less a day. Barely lost 2lbs and I’ve been doing this for almost a month. I’m also in the military so I’m at risk for being overweight for my height. I give up. Everyone tells me you’re only supposed to eat for fuel and it doesn’t have to taste good. Any foods I do find enjoyable are unhealthy or just don’t contribute to weight loss at all. Even when I did starve myself in the past I never lost weight. I think my body and mind will just never get along.

As you practice and teach others do you find yourself ever going back to old habits? Also does it get easier with time? I'm definitely finding myself better than I was a year ago.

But what if your needs can’t be met at the time like if it’s more money or more people that you haven’t met yet or just a different circumstance sometimes every need can’t be met
