How to Improve Eyesight Naturally - Fact vs Fiction?

About This Video: Are there eye exercises for stronger vision? Can you improve eyesight naturally? In this video, Joseph J. Allen, OD FAAO from Doctor Eye Health reviews several myopia cure theories from the internet. If you are curious about how to improve eyesight and are questioning the scientific validity of these theories, please consult your local eye care professional about your eye health - as these theories are not a replacement for medical treatment.

Many people have asked me over the years about how to improve eyesight without glasses, but I have refrained from commenting as this is a pretty loaded topic. To prepare for this video, I have read multiple books on eye training and active focus theories such as endmyopia, all in an effort to give a more detailed explanation of what these "myopia cure" theories suggest and teach. Unfortunately, many of the theories such as the Bates Method are outdated and carry little scientific support.

Eyesight is extremely complex and involves much more coordination between the eyes and the brain than many sources lead people to believe. I urge anyone to read and investigate these theories with some level of skepticism and to always consult your local eye care provider regarding all matters pertaining to your eye health.

Does wearing glasses make you go more short sighted? I feel like my eye sight is much worse since wearing glasses.

I fully respect eye doctors and the work they do. I am a middle aged woman. On a number of occasions over the years, I was certain that I needed reading glasses as I was holding books further and further away. On each occasion I have used simple eye exercises, taking about 5 minutes a day for a week or so and my reading vision returns. I do them periodically for maintenance. I have had numerous visits with the opticians. They don't know that I do these exercises, but they tell me that whatever I am doing to keep doing it. I don't wear any glasses at all and never had a prescription for one.
My brother is over 60 years old and has been wearing reading glasses for a few years. He told me last week that he hasn't needed his glasses for the last two years, as, to my surprise, he had been doing simple eye exercises in the morning while lying in bed.

Does anyone else feel ashamed to wear glasses or eye contacts at such a young age? I definitely do since my family always I’m “blind” or at least every time we go to the eye doctor. I do admit that I spent majority of my life on screens at least when I was 7-14 (still 14 but trying to take better care of my eyes). But I can’t help having this thought in my head how my family never really payed attention to me or got me into extra curricular activities to avoid these type of things...so I really don’t see why I should be completely blamed. Especially when I was ignored and abused as a young child so I would mainly spend time on my phone. Sorry for the rant I’m just really worried right now because I don’t want to go actually blind at a young age like my 20’s or 40’s, I get really close to mental breakdowns just thinking about it. Let me know if I’m not the only one, or your opinions

I've been exercising my eyes since I was a kid, looking out the school window focusing in and out and being outside trying to focus on things far away. I had 20/20, now I have 20/14. It definitely works with practice and patience. The eye is a muscle like anything else.

The body adapts to what you give it. If you give it close up books a lot, it will adapt to reading close up. You give it glasses and it adapts to the glasses. Active focus isn't only about loosening the ciliary muscles of the eyes as you've said. The reason the eyedrops don't give a myopic person clear vision instantly is because the eye is still in the elongated shape it has changed to. It takes time, but eventually you can get the eyes back to 20/20 with the proper stimulus. simple.

Hi, I really hope that you will read this. Yes, I am experiencing improved vision exactly from Endmyopia practices. I managed to reduce my diopters by 1.5 - from -4.25 to -2.5-2.75 at the moment. I think I have a little different understanding of the goal of active focus. It's idea is not to strengthen any muscles. It's idea is to provide a stimulus for the eyes to shorten. The same way as focusing for long time up close is providing stimulus for the eyes to get "longer", actively focusing far away should be providing reverse stimulus for the eyes to shorten. So the theory behind the practice is that you improve your vision by shortening the Axial length and therefore bringing the natural focal point of the internal lens closer to the retina when looking at larger distances.
Disclaimer: I am by no means a professional. I just wanted to share my understanding of the principle and my experience.

I improved my vision doing exercises - 0.5 D astigmatism in both eyes, and 0.25 D of nearsighted in 6 weeks of doing exercising plus palming 15 min a day. But my vision is -6. It can definitely help to stop a progression and improve a little bit

I had had extreme hyperopia since I was born and recently I got a FemtoLASIK surgery. From around +7 and -1, 25 cylinder I've gone down to around +1 on one eye and +0, 25 on other eye. Apart from how happy I was the day after I can see well enough not to wear glasses at all. I'm 24 and thankfully my eyes accommodate well enough, we'll see how long my inner lens can sustain it. My doctor said around my mid 30s my eyesight might worsen instead of 40s.

I think it's all about your discipline for yourself. Some people with good eyesight also read and work closely a lot but they really take break after 30 minutes or an hour, they don't look at the screen continuously and forget everything. I naturally believe that when you take break and look far away you are giving your eye a real relax this is very important to slow down progression of myopia, especially for adult. Children has a different story, they need more care
