When I first started doing intermittent fasting, I discovered that doing a workout was an effective way to help me extend my fast.

Dr. Jason Fung, you gave me permission to stop eating. Thank you. My entire life I’ve been an overweight athlete. I run and lift weights and have been trying to lose weight for 20 years because I no longer needed the weight. I recently was given not so great news about my health, frustrated, i tried everything except fasting - vegan, keto, Mediterranean, CICO, lumen. I tried fasting once for 5 days in my early 20’s as a challenge to see if I could survive in the event things got tough for me financially. I survived it and forgot about it. My entire life I’ve been told that I need to eat to stay health, I need to eat to have energy, I need to eat to be successful. You told me that those mantras are not true and gave me the key to unlock my weight loss. I’ve only been fasting for a short time but I know I will reach my goal in no time. I’ve already lost 17 lbs in less than 2 weeks mixing up my fasting giving my body just enough carbs to do my sprinting. You are saving my life and adding years to my life. It will not be wasted on me. Thank you for keeping me off medication. I don’t want to contribute to the high cost of healthcare and I certainly don’t want to contribute to overwhelming our medical system.

Thank you for addressing this. There’s almost no content on this topic. Personal experience tells me, the harder I workout, the hungrier I get. It’s counterproductive to weight loss.
However, brisk walks along with proper diet is great for fat reduction

I've known for a number of years now that the more (harder) I exercise, the hungrier I am. While training for a half marathon I gained 10 lbs over 4 months back in 2017. It was a bittersweet victory because it took me weeks after the race to get my appetite under control.

Thank you for this video. It just confirms my own experiences. I lost 25kg with different eating, it took me 5months.I never did any excercises at all and my loss was great every week. But the excercise /weight loss fairytale is very difficult to gsz out of the brain of people.

I love the tooth brushing analogy. Exercise is good for us. But it is not the main factor in weight loss/ weight management.

Always a pleasure listening to your videos Dr. Fung!
I've always swam on and off my whole life. Years ago I needed to lose weight and started swimming daily to lose weight. And I did lose but as soon as my work schedule changed and I couldn't get to the pool every day, I quickly gained it all back. A little over a year ago I found your videos, read your books and have lost over 150 lbs.😁 and I'm still intermittent fasting to maintain. I started back swimming again last spring and now I swim over a mile just twice a week for averall health and I'm never hungry after I swim.
I'm now lifeguarding at my pool and was talking to a man last week who is trying to lose weight and swims every day. I briefly told him my story and he was interested in learning more but doesn't do YouTube so I brought him your The Obesity Code book to read😊.
Thanks for all you do. Truly.🙏

I agree with this. This is why i keep my workouts at aerobic zone. If i do intense or huffing puffing exercise i feel fatigue and very hungry.

This makes so much sense of my extreme weight loss as a teenager on restricted carbs diet and exercising for 3 hours a day for 5 days a week. I had been morbidly obese and lost 65 # when I was 14-15 y.o. That was in the ‘70s when Dr. Irwin Stillman published a book on carb restriction which I was just lucky enough to come across from a neighbor who was excited about a diet (back then everything was a fad diet) that actually worked. I’d been fat all my life and nothing had worked, especially not the advice from registered dietitian fanatics who said you must eat a big healthy high-carb breakfast every morning (oatmeal and several servings of fruit) or you just weren’t really trying to lose weight.

October 27, my life has changed forever. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was 265 pre diabetes. The dr that night said to watch your videos. I started watching that night. I went to check my A1c Jan 27, 2022. I was 5.3. Which is thanks to what you’re sharing. Bless you for sharing. Not many people share. I share my journey on Facebook and tik tok. Also I’m off met for min, I have lost over 60 pounds. I still eat once sometimes twice per day. But I cut out sugar and flour. I loved my breads and pastry but my health is more important. God bless you for sharing and all glory to God I knocked out type 2 diabetes. This is huge as I lost my grandpa to diabetes, dr amputated his leg and he never come out of the hospital. My dad had that as well but had other complications. So for me to beat this, wow!!! All glory to God!!

I always found that going for a long walk was a great distraction from hunger.

I did my training after 16 hours of fasting, and when I finished I was staving! I wouldn't say I overeaten, but I never felt that hungry after a training before.

Thank you Dr. Fung, this was super informative. Over compensation seems like such an obvious result of exercising and homeostasis but you explained this so well. I love your channel! Thanks so much 😊💕

My three pillars of weight loss are:

1. Carbohydrate restriction
2. Intermittent fasting
3. Resistance training*

* 50% at/ below aerobic threshold

I’ve never lost weight exercising but I’ve gained muscle so my body looked more toned and still weighed almost exactly the same.
