Three Ways To Fix 'This Effect Requires GPU Acceleration' In Premiere Pro

I was having some frustrating issues with Premiere Pro, and after some problems trying to find a solution for it, I eventually found three different things that might solve it. So here they all are, in one handy video. I've also put them below to save you listening to my boring voice.

NOTE - If you have AMD, these first two steps probably won't work for you. Skip to 1:20.

1 - Ensure your Rendering is being handled by your GPU
Go to File - Project Settings - General, and under "Video Rendering and Playback", make sure Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration is turned on.

2 - Download the "CUDA Toolkit" from Nvidia.
I don't know how this works, but it seemed to do the buisness for some people. This probably only works if you have an Nvidia card, so not sure about AMD.

3 - Remove any conflicts with VR Effects on your timeline
I was having issues with 'Corner Pin' and 'Magnify' effects, whilst some transistion presets I have (Thanks, FilmCrux!) used VR effects. I removed these effects, and everything went back to normal.

Straight to the point:
Although I knew my hardware could support the effects, none of these solutions worked for me until I found out that
if you move the effect causing this error such as VR effects to the bottom layer under all the other effects or under some specific effect would actually solve the issue.

Omg, dude. Thank you for giving me a reason. I went crazy for hours and reinstalled drivers I don't know how many times. Although I still don't understand why VR effects are so problematic but at least now I know I should work around them if I ever get this annoying red bar again. Thanks again!

If you are using Glitch effect, you have to scale up the video clip. Glitch effect needs more space than preview. For instance, if your clip scale is %100 and get an error like gpu acceralation needed while using glitch effect, make your clip scale is %115. It can help

If none of these solutions worked for you, try this. I found out that Adobe Media Encoder is responsible for this issue sometimes. If you export individual files in premiere instead of batches in Media Encoder, the error will go away. I would also advise not making the VR transitions longer than they’re defaulted, this can cause the error as well. Hope this helps

YOOOO This just knocked my socks off. I don't ever remember switching this to software but all my footage went from red to yellow now that I turned it back on and my edits are running much smoother and faster. I just thought it was the bitrate/ resolution of my clips. Thank you so much, I am eternally grateful.

Hi. Had the same problem and the last step with the vr effects solved the problem. You never stop learning 😃. Thanks a lot!!

Thank you so much for this! You helped solve what I thought was an insane driver issue. Nope – just overlapping FX, one of them VR. The VR effect still runs fine as you show, so long as I don't have another layered with it. Choice!

Thanks a lot. I had Warp Stabilizer and VR De-Noise running on the same clip and when I turned De-Noise of, the problem was solved. Now I just had the noise, and that didn't look too good. I found out, that if I placed the the Warp Stabilizer above the De-Noise in the effect controls panel, the problem was solved completely.
