How to Fix Analog Stick Drift - 3 Ways - In this video I'm showing you 3 different ways to fix analog stick drift. Option 1: Replace the analog stick. Option 2: Clean the potentiometer. Option 3: Replace the potentiometer. Depending on the problem, cleaning or replacing just the potentiometer won't always work but they can be great options to try first since they are easier than replacing the entire analog stick.

HUGE TIP - For replacing a potentiometor, if you pry it away from the main assembly (like you would to clean it) and bend it back and forth till it snaps off from the pins, that makes it so much easier because then you can just desolder each pin and pull them out one at a time. That way you don't even need a solder sucker or solder wick.

Ive learned so much from your page to be honest. Definitely has helped me with soldering at work 💯

This is gold! I've replaced the whole analog stick many times... little did I realize you can take off the sensors and clean them.
Since this video, I've since replaced the sensors from a new analog stick, without replacing the potentiometers and it seemed to work on one controller... But like everything, its a hit or miss, didn't work on another controller.
Now instead of removing the whole analog stick, I'll just be replacing the potentiometers from now! Thanks!

Thanks for the help. It worked on Wii U doing the cleaning method, just took the potentiometer out and sprayed isopropyl alcohol, brush teeth, put them all together again, and now it's working flawless.

Let’s be honest, most of you won’t do all this just to fix it😂

I've managed to fix 30+ DS4 🎮 since the lock down thanks to this man (without soldering, as I don't have that equipment/knowledge)

It's kind of obscure, but you forgot that the 4th way to fix stick drift is to replace the thermal paste.

Good guide thank you! I cleaned mine which made a difference for a few months, but now the drift is back again. Appreciated you saying that this method doesn’t always work, makes me not feel as incompetent..!

Nice one, Steve! Thanks a lot for doing this video as not many people know that you do not have to replace the stick itself and can do with very simple repair quite often.

So I have two newish controllers, both with stick drift issues. I'll be trying some of these fixes tonight, I'll post my results tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Thank you so much for this video. One of the analog sticks in my controller was drifting vertically. I opened the potentiometer, cleaned it up following your instructions, and now it is working like a charm. And I used the right amount of thermal paste, as well. :-)

But where do you get your parts? Its so hard to find legitimate parts, they always seem to be either aftermarket, faulty, or otherwise just not as accurate as the ones that come on controllers.

Me about to skip through the sponsor segment: "Wait, what? OH THAT'S AWESOME!" I was debating what I'd do for this DIY project I'm planning (I'd need 2 of the only breadboards I have on hand), and JLCPCB looks a heck of a lot better. Kudos for getting an awesome sponsor.

And also kudos for the video itself. I was just talking with some friends on discord about joystick drift with the Switch lol. Seems a lot of folks are replacing THE WHOLE PAIR OF JOYCONS when a joystick is drifting.

This video and the 8 broken Dualsense video inspired me to fix my own. I have no soldering equipment (costs more than a controller) so I bent the potentiometer back to clean it properly. Way farther back than I meant to but it was probably for the better. It was VERY dirty and with good deal of wear but it seems to be working much much better for now (knock on wood).

This video helped out so much. I had an old Xbox controller kicking around that drifted pretty bad. It was in pretty good shape so it always bothered me. I opened up the potentiometer to clean it and found it was full of some liquid, probably soda. Works like a dream now.

Changing the potentiometer worked for me! Had an old 360 controller and all i had to do was switch out the potentiometers on my Series S with the ones on the 360. Imagine the little strips as a skull shape and the chin part goes at the bottom. This video saved me so much money!
