DISCLAIMERS:

ESTRANGEMENT AND ABUSE: When considering the possibility of reconciling with an emotionally and or physically abusive great care is required. Reconciling may only be possible if the abuser is willing to work with a family therapist. When there is abuse, individuals estrange out of necessity and self-preservation. Consider if it is safe to resume a relationship with an abusive family member without evidence that the abuser has changed or takes responsibility for their harmful actions.

My daughter has been slowly shutting me out for the last few years. COVID didn’t help. She has struggled with anxiety and depression since high school. She is 27 now. Is on medication and speaks to a therapist. We do not communicate well and I believe I have been unintentionally gaslighting her, trying to inject my beliefs of what she should be doing, how should should act, etc. Finally, after some reflection and her keeping me at a distance for over a year, I decided to take a break! I am hurting too.I
told her I was gonna give her some space and take the pressure off her in a text. I am devastated and grieving. She texted me back and said she was so thankful for my text more than I could know. So I’m gonna leave her be. I know there is hope. That’s enough for me. We both know she will need to return home at the end of the year for financial reasons and now I’m going to concentrate on self care, do the work, and learn to communicate better, so that when she is back under my roof we can begin a new and maybe better relationship.

I think we have both agreed to cut ties. She drinks like a fish, lives with a jerk husband, she's very overworked and I've been there day after day to help her to do her housework while she works on the computer at her work. She recently screwed up mother's day so badly, and I was so hurt, and that's how it started. I'm lost without her. I'm single. No other children. Her father is dead. She's my only family. Her home is toxic and she knows it. She denied everything, told me everything was my imagination, and she hopes to talk to me soon. I didn't think she had such denial and cowardice in her. I've said nothing since. We were so close for so many years, I can't believe this is happening.
