The Union Cabinet recently approved the new National Education Policy 2020 to bring “large-scale transformational reforms” in both school and higher education. The new education policy for the country comes after almost 34 years. It stipulates for a complete overhaul of the existing education system. Among the key highlights of NEP 2020 is the decision to make home language, mother tongue or regional language as the medium of instruction up to class 5. Experts believe this may create a long-term impact in nation building. Imparting school education in mother tongue or regional language may bring drastic change in the ongoing process of human resource development. Analysts believe regional languages help inculcate human values and emotions and learning mother tongue will also help future generations forge a relation with their own social and cultural fabric. In this edition of The Big Picture we analyse the importance of vernacular languages, culture and values in NEP 2020.

News?
Among the key highlights of NEP 2020 is the decision to make home language, mother tongue, or regional language as the medium of instruction up to class 5.
Importance of vernacular language in primary education
1. The familiarity of the child with the language.
2. WHO nurturing framework- early childhood cares important. 1$ in primary age gets a return of 18$ which later reduces to 1$ and even lower later.
3. Children can learn multiple languages (up to 18).
4. Ownership and pride- educated people producing vernacular plays and prose. Example Kondi, Bhojpuri, Santhali, etc.
5. 10% of the world language going extinct is Indian.
CHALLENGES
1. Too many regional languages can make it impracticable.
2. Reading material, terminologies missing in the mother tongue.
3. Child of 18 years, emotional maturity of 3-6 years old.
OTHER CONCERNS
Three Language formula
1. What? Two natives ( 1 north +1 south) and one English.
2. North has failed to implement it, only focusing on Hindi and English.
3. However, it is made flexible so that the child can choose the language.
4. Also, a foreign language can be taught beyond class 7.
Ethical education can be challenging.
OTHER PARTS OF THE POLICY
1. Art and music are also integrated now into the system.
2. Vocational learning.
SOLUTION
1. Capacity building of the teachers and parents.
2. Modern Science + Ancient Learning integration.
3. Treating all the professions equally.
4. Self-empowerment holistically.
5. Swami Vivekananda: Education is a manifestation of perfection already in man. The intent has been made clear through this policy, also making it an India centric education policy.

This change is much appreciated n need of the hour.

As a mother, i was throughly disappointed with the current syllabus of our kids. They knew more about Roman empire, French Revolution n European Renaissance..

Than Indian Mauryan Empire, King Ashoka, Sangam literature, or Swadeshi Movement or our noble Indian national movement.

This has led to disconnect from our own ethnic moorings. N uncritical glorification of english and western.

This change will have long term effects

Challenges NEP.
Most important is flexibility in policy
and mind set should change.
Government came new policy education good but many challenges and improve infrastructure.
India's multiple local languages so face and how to handle.
Starting is very difficult but after is comfortable education system.
Sates are check education ground level.

one sided argument. english and modern culture needs the equal importance. live in the present rather than building castles of the past. i do not say focus on english only. but i say that dont politicize in the name of past culture and greatness do not forget the future

I also think that the lack of professional counsellors in schools, especially in the secondary stage is a major drawback. Most kids are not capable of understanding and estimating their capacity and most of them end up picking their streams based on what their parents say or what their peers are opting for. There needs to be a dedicated counselling department starting Class 9 onwards in both public and private schools.

In case of teaching through mother tongue upto Class 5, what about the kids of parents with transferrable jobs who might be studying in states other than their native? For this section of kids, it might be harder to learn the local language if say, the child belongs to UP but goes to school in Assam. Has the government paid heed to situations like this?

But if we are promoting regional languages, it should be done by teaching the language rather than teaching in that specific language. Vikram Sampath himself said that children upto age of 5 learn more than the later age groups. Then, why shouldn't we try to teach English in this age group only so that, the children do not feel lost later on? In the era of globalisation, I guess English should be given more priority in medium of studies! India has many regional languages which would make this process clumsy and in the meantime, many children will lose confidence in their English which is still primary language for many jobs(eg: this debate is also done in English).

The only question is from where the Government expects to get the Money to implement such an Education Policy??

India is a Nation of 1.3 Billion people its focus should on Educating & Training the Masses for Jobs & Skills sets that are acceptable at Global level.

How can Nation achieve such things if its going to have Multiple Educational Boards & Medium of Education??

There is a need for Standardization of Education for upcoming generations to provide them Equal Opportunities irrespective of their Caste, Class or Regional Backgrounds.

GoI needs a 3-Language Policy with:-
(1) "English" as the Medium of Education & Compulsory Literature subject till 12th standard
(2) "Regional Language" as compulsory subject till 12th standard
(3) "Sanskrit" as the compulsory 3rd Language from 6th to 12th standard.

English will allow Global Connectivity & Access to International Knowledge systems
"Regional Language" will allow preservation of Regional linguistic & cultural identity.
"Sanskrit" will allow Preservation & Promotion of Indian Civilization, Culture & Traditions.

Once Sanskrit Linguistic skills get to an acceptable level within the Nation then GoI can replace "Hindi" with "Sanskrit" as one of its Official Languages. Then GoI will 2 Official Languages of "English" & "Sanskrit".
English representing Global Connectivity & Sanskrit representing Connection to Ancient Indian civilization traditions.

The focus shouldn't only be on Traditional School education but also on :-
(1) Yoga
(2) Meditation
(3) Indian Classical Dances forms as per Region + Indian Contemporary dance form
(4) Indian Painting Style
(5) Indian Architecture
(6) Development of an Combined "Indian Martial Arts" Tradition just like China did with WUSHU.
(7) Sports especially the ones that are Popular in India or have major Overseas market.

The new education policy 2020 is a good policy, but not until this policy is implemented well. Until then it will not be beneficial for us. Because we need this type of reform in the field of education. Because we wanted to create world class education.
