In this episode of The Big Picture based on NEP: BTech in regional languages. 14 Engineering Colleges in the country will now begin to offer various courses in regional languages. In a move to ensure implementation of the New Education policy, this step has been taken by these colleges, spread over eight states in the country. These colleges have secured permission from the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to collectively admit over 1,000 students in undergraduate programmes that will be taught in regional languages from the new academic year. At least half of them, four from Uttar Pradesh, two from Rajasthan and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand will teach in Hindi. The remaining colleges from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu will offer the programme in Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Tamil, respectively. The move has been hailed by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, who has hoped for more and more colleges & other technical education institutions to offer courses in regional languages. Interestingly, to mark the decision, the Vice President’s secretariat also posted the tweet in 11 languages. So how beneficial is this move going to be for students. It's been a subject matter of debate ever since the proposal was made for technical education in regional languages. We are going to revisit this aspect with our panelists today. And we are also going to talk about the potential challenges that students of these courses could face in their education ahead and careers, how they can be addressed and more and more institutes can be encouraged to do something similar. To discuss these aspects and much more on Technical Education in Regional Languages.

Many people here are only thinking about why english is must for private jobs.
This is the thing.
You have the choice. You want to do that course in English, go for it.
Someone wants to do that in regional language, let him do that.
Choices are important.
Also, this move will indirectly help educated human resources (who will go for regional language) to stay in their native state so it'll help stopping the migration of intelligent minds and help in improving the states overall.

I can agree about primary/secondary education in regional languages. But higher education is to take up private jobs or do research where English is a must.

I think before implementation it should be a survey of engineering graduates / medical graduate & faculty members who teaches subjects other than Dean / HODs (Dean & HODs have nothing to do, only administration related works)

There are serious challenges in the implementation of this policy. For one, these guys would face severe challenges in employment, particularly in MNC's. Also the opportunities available to them would be much more limited compared to the peers. This at a time when India's economic strength lies in outsourcing the services of it's service sector to nations abroad...

Harshit circumnavigated around these challenges instead of answering them...Does not seem like a well thought out policy, rather an ad-hoc move with work in progress.

It is good to open up Engineering in the regional languages but it causes a great grievance when enter into research and job field. English have occupied a large space in India in particular and world in general.

if they teach all subject in english from childhood, except one regional language then english would not be a great challenge for us. no matter what do regional language, one day you have to face the english at some time. plz dont ignore english. we face difficulties bcz we are not familiar in english from childhood. for etc, english medium students are far ahead from us

I personally welcome....
Its needed and will gives the result....a building constructed from its material not from English Technical education in regional languages will increase the productivity. But it should remember that India have opportunity in service sector...so we have to promote Made in india simultaneously (very strongly).. a technocrat needs technologies in that language which he can understand well .... But learning new language also expand our minds so yes it should be part of curriculum as language not as technology.

I think this is a very good step for rural background student which is not comfortable going through in English, But another hand it is a very big challenge for implementation.
If that policy implement
smoothly so like that policy apply another education sector which all student will same place, still All the university taught the English language as well so that students after 4 or 3 year they will comfortable with English language.

I think this has done to make enginners to work for their own country. This is hidden part of implementing technical degree in vernacular language.

Such a regressive move in todays time. The minimum qualification for IIT professors is having degrees from foreign universities. Research articles/ Books everything is authored and conveyed in English. For a diverse country as ours, how does one single exam filter students for universities in different states (different language)?
Politics is one thing, but this is bad policy. Focus should be on building people up to global standards, not dumbing them down.
