The Big Picture: 75 Years of UN

October 24 marks the diamond jubilee of the United Nations. But far from a joyous celebration, it is an occasion to sombrely reflect on why the UN is stagnating at 75 and how it can regain its lost lustre. Although much has changed in the international system since 1945, the world body continues to see a tussle between ‘principle’ and ‘power’. On the one hand, the UN represents hopes of a peaceful and just world order through multilateral cooperation, abidance by international law, and upliftment of the downtrodden. On the other, the institution has been designed to privilege the most powerful states of the post-World War II dispensation by granting them commanding heights over international politics via the undemocratic instruments of veto power and permanent seats in the Security Council (UNSC). In this edition of The Big Picture we will analyse 75 years of UN and what next for the world body.

Guest:
1. Manjeev Singh Puri, Former Ambassador
2. Arvind Gupta, Director, Vivekananda International Foundation
3. Prof. Swaran Singh, Chairperson, Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament, JNU

Anchor: Frank Rausan Pereira

75 years of UN:- manifestation of wwII, tussle b/w power and principles.
Success:- no world war despite arm races, rivalries etc.
Major role in Decolonization, peace keeping mission, only which represent global view.
Fails in:- Not represents present power dynamics, not yet multipolar,
Favour western more, arms race, not controlled the nuclear race, cold war etc.
Way forward: need of reformed multi-lateralism as in its spirit.
UNSC should be expanded. India should use opportunity as a non permanent member of UNSC.

India must persevere and be determined about its position rather than bringing it out only on occasions. It should make other allied nations that have ties with India realise its value and the power they can all gather together once India gets permanent seat at the Security council. India must also see to the added pressure it might recieve if it becomes a member on the Security council and not have to compromise with its own internal issues.

Definitely United nation should set independent, and should be unbiased in terms of taking reforms and making decisions. It should not only listen to the powerful countries like US, China, Russia and other countries.

we need multilateralism rather than autocracy of power, which in the hand of p 5 countries . currently no other parallel organisation of UN, we need reform in the governance, so it will be global governace not a global government. UN has shown sustainablity , that is the achievement of un. at a last any institution couldn't survive if it being hurt core interest of key members of the institution.

In my opinion
first point I would like to make
We should be very clear in our mind
That United nation is about global governance it's not global government so it's we who are responsible ...
India need to be the part of UN
India can be the part of UN, but it will take time to be the part of United Nation, let see how soon indian become the part of UN
Our honorable Pm has strongly has spoken about reform....
