Hill starts - no gas just clutch

🔴 Hill starts with no gas. Thats what we are looking at today, hill starts. Most driving instructors will teach you to set the gas before you lift the clutch to the biting point. But some will also teach you to set the clutch and then gas to move off.
So I often get students who come to me after being taught clutch and gas but struggle to move off on a hill start. We will practice moving off with clutch then gas in that order on a flat road, then on a hill start. Then finally on a steep hill start and see if its possibly to move off smoothly and with confidence using the clutch and gas method. At this point we will see if it's possibly to do an hill start on a steep hill without using the handbrake.

These are the most useful types of video for learning to drive. Because you don’t need to waist time in lessons. As you just need to practise it, after watching this.

When I had my first lesson I was taught to pull away just using the clutch to get me to understand how it works then the all the rest of my lessons I was taught to use gas first then biting point as not only do you move off quicker your less likely to roll back! As you showed on this video. Just using the clutch to move away isn't enough to emerge at roundabouts and junctions and especially hills when safe to do so because it's not going to be quick enough not saying speed up but enough speed to get you out of trouble if need be and fit in with the rest.

Travis, gas then biting point at the last, did u do with handbrake? Because without handbrake n not using 1st method u would have rolled a little right?

It makes sense to me to follow a standard single system you can use universally in any vehicle however steep an incline, even where a road has a mountainous up slope. There is nothing more disappointing than learning to drive in a powerful diesel car where your instructor allows a system that generally does not work in small engine petrol cars. Then you buy a petrol car or go on a motoring holiday in Wales.

EXTREMELY USEFUL AND HELPFUL!!!! GOD BLESS YOU FOR THIS!!! I firmly believe it was not an accident that I found your "don't give up" video last night!!!
How long does it take to learn to do it quickly without handbrake applied? (This is how he teaches me but am way too slow) At the green light I won't have much time to feel and hear the biting point...😰

But if I move my right foot onto the gas pedal before finding the biting point I roll back and it is a major mistake and instant failure in the test... 🤔😟

I wish I could practise it with You! I'm sure it would go well and I wouldn't be nervous. You possess everything that makes an excellent instructor!!!! 💎

Thanks for your explanation. I’m so use to the brake and clutch method. My first instructor the car I could do the biting point foot on brake and then gas but my new one if I try doing it that way the car will stall. So you recommend doing it just below the biting point? If I’m going to do this method.

Would this work with a. Large diesel van ? I’m in a van next week and slightly worried, just the fact of it being a very big transit van l rolling back etc would be dangerous badly,

Hey thank you for the informative video. I know it’s not recommended but is this the same for petrol cars?

Quick question, can you take a driving test in a car with a electric parking break? Wouldn’t this make it no effort to do hill starts?
