Hill starts are one of the toughest things you'll learn when first driving a manual car. I explain the handbrake method in part 1 - and the normal method in part 2 soon!

"Take your foot off the brake and the handbrake will hold you stationery"

My 1984 Honda: no I don't think I will

Hardcore hillstart training.

25% boat ramp with a 2500kg boat + trail with a 1600kg frontwheel drive manual car.

Can't give to much gas or the front wheels start spinning.
Had to keep the car at 3000rpm (diesel) with a slipping clutch, when I tried to release the clutch the rpm's whent down and i couldn't fight is with the gas pedal.

there was also the factor that the trailer wasn't designed for that boat so I had to go real slow so we could see if every support was placed right before the full weight of the boat was on the trailer.

Hill starts are easy ! Keep holding the brake pedal and let the clutch go to biting point, it won’t stall out and then when you transition from brake to gas the car will hold itself in place

It seems easy until you get to do it. Well I am for it anyway. Haha. Thanks man.

I drove a car for the first time in my life yesterday and it was a stick, I started on a hill that you have to slant over to walk up without falling lol

Better method: Learn to use your right foot for gas and brake at the same time. It's useful for hill starts AND rev matching while braking (when you typically need it). In most vehicles the gas and brake are close enough you can put your foot on the right side of the brake pedal and "roll" your foot into pushing the gas pedal. Once you get the method down you can engage the clutch while using the gas and holding the brake at the same time. Once the clutch engages roll your foot off the brake.

my dad taught me manual young in his 92 accord and he taught me how to keep the car in place with only the clutch no brake right before the clutch engages it holds it in place it works on really steep hills and has worked on my car and whenever i drive any of my friends cars you hold the brake and then slowly release the clutch to where you feel the clutch engage and then you release the brake and roll forward eventually you learn where to place the clutch to where you don’t need the brake pedal its like probably a couple millimeters before the clutch fully engages

I rolled back a bit in my apartment complex's main gate and there was a car behind. I wasn't able to take it up. My father took it up from there.

Another method is just moving from the brake to the throttle and releasing the clutch simultaneously. Less clutch wear

I was in traffic on a hill for a hour. Stalled twice.

If you're in a truck or any car with a pedal operated parking brake, just hold the brakes (not parking brake) then slowly let out the clutch until it starts to bite, take your foot off the brake and give it some gas and let the clutch out. Taking the clutch JUST to it's biting point should keep the car mostly stationary which allows you to get off the brake and give it some gas to let the clutch out the rest of the way.

Even if I HAD a hand operated parking brake in my truck it wouldn't help me lol. The parking brake needs adjusting, it doesn't keep the truck from rolling on a hill, it just keeps it stationary on very slight inclines.

I have those same shoes. Super comfy, literally got them specifically for driving. Comfy slip-on gym shoes

I think everyone in europe can do that, but that is ofc bcs of mandatory hours driving with an instructor before any driving tests, but i imagine it is useful to ppl from America :)

Thanks man I did this while watching the video on my handbreak hand

Haha I’m lucky ig my brakes stay engaged for 2-3 seconds (enough time to roll forward) after I lift off the brakes when I’m on an incline.

It's even more fun on a motorcycle. Haha. Just got one and yeah. At least my feet hold me up and all

Damn this really helps. Thanks bro. Just did my car license test and nearly failed because of one dip road. I was curious how do the manual drivers could control that but after seeing this now I understand actually you could press the acceleration before pulling of the clutch😂
