Euro NCAP Crash & Safety Tests of BMW 5 Series 2023

Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:

▶ a frontal impact test where 50% of the width of the car strikes an oncoming deformable barrier, travelling at 50 km/h
▶ a frontal impact test where the car impacts a full-width rigid barrier
▶ a side impact test where a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
▶ a pole test where the car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole and the robustness of the centre airbag is evaluated
▶ a whiplash test performed on a sled.

A series of pedestrian tests are also conducted with different impactors : adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form. As well as AEB pedestrian and cyclist tests. In 2023 a test scenario for Cyclist Dooring Prevention was introduced.

Active safety is rated based on the performance of the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking car-to-car and car-to-motorcycle scenarios, occupant status monitoring (including seatbelt reminders, fatigue, distraction and impairment), lane support and speed assistance technologies.

0:13 is the proof that they need to use a much heavier dummy car in these tests to reflect the avg new car. The bmw barely slowed down while the dummy car got violently launched backwards due to extreme mass difference.

What does it take to score above %90 for road users overall? This one seemed pretty good to me, stopped in time with good distance.

Euro NCAP, when will you start doing small overlap crash-tests and also updated side crash-test like IIHS does? Those tests are more severe and far more realistic than any of your current tests. Furthermore, ditching the original moderate overlap test for the 50 km/h deformable barrier test prooves that Euro NCAP engineers fail to understand Newton's 3rd law, i.e. the 64 km/h test in the deformable barrier is more severe than this test with 50 km/h.
