Stellan Skargard's Baron is terrifying. When he said "My Desert. My Arrakis. My Dune." I literally got shivers down my spine.

I could be wrong, but it seems like the most recent Baron's portrayal pulled a lot from Kurtz in Apocalypse Now - the baldness, not working himself up too much, being able to slip in and out of shadows even with his size...

To me, the most memorable of Baron's actions was when he used artillery and expressed his satisfaction in trapping his enemies in a cave with these outdated weapons.

Stellan Skarsgard made his version probably one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever watched

When he floated over the dining table towards Yueh and Leto.. that shit was skin crawling. Something that should be known about the Baron is that he’s a capable warrior.

I like Skarsguards more calculated approach. You can tell by the way he looks around that he’s constantly analyzing and thinking about his next move.

I remember back when I read the novel, that Baron Harkonnen was cold, calculating and sinister. Then Herbert throws in a few lines of sympathy toward the duke that completely toppled my perception of the Baron. I remember it being a jarring, almost physical shock. I had been building up a comic book villain in my head, and suddenly this was a complex character.

I listened to a great audiobook of Dune, that was fully casted.

The actor for The Baron did something interesting. He used two different voices for him. Baron Harkonnen has a smooth and dark sinister voice for when he is conspiracing with his allies, but around everyone else he adopts a jovel and clown like demeanor.

Imagine if Dune adaptation was done right as early as possible, no doubt Orson Welles could've pulled the role off well.

I like that he floats, it's an added bit of short hand for his over decadence, combined with his weight.

80s Baron was campy.
2000s Baron was charmingly arrogant.
Dune Part 1 and 2’s Baron is just terror incarnate.

"If there's enough interest" Vile, buddy, we'll listen to you talk about quite literally any evil characters. Go off my dude, we're all here for it.

Weird to think that the Baron has limits. He didn’t want to treat Duke Leto to torture. Whether it was reinforced by the fact the Emperor didn’t want the Duke to suffer in death (and yes, I know, torture for info is different than torture in death) or he didn’t want to show the sardaukar examiner/go in front of a truthsayer, he definitely had some respect for his ancestral enemy by restraining himself. He does go on to convince himself that since the Duke hadn’t replied to his questions that he was justified in the torture, but you could see it as him having to use it as a last-resort. Seems like the only good quality the Baron had.

Mini-series Harkonnen makes me hungry... for bread... true Roman bread...

Even if you've read the novel already, listening to the audio book version is absolutely worth it.
The voice actors and actresses do such an amazing job of bringing the characters to life.

"Behold the planet of Arrakis, does it not remind you of most sweetest caramel?"

I would love to see an ‘Analyzing Evil’ episode of Azula. You always break it down in an amazing way

Honestly when he started floating in the movie I thought he looked like a cobra, and as you said he poisoned everything he touches.

Stellan Skarsgård nails every roles he's ever been given. An underrated actor even if the version wasn't faithful to the literature.

Reinvented villains may have become particularly popular in this century: Moriarty in Sherlock and Elementary, Blofeld in Spectre, Dr. Smith in Lost In Space. However different Stellan’s Baron in the new Dune will be from before, I’m quite intrigued.

Thank you for this very special episode.

I really like Ian McNeice's and Stellan Skarsgard 's performances. Two different aspects/interpretations that still try to honour the book in their own way.

The Baron's role in Children of Dune is so sad as you watch Alia lose to his willpower
