Who's buying a Sony A6700 for sports videography?

I bought my sony a6700 and SIGMA 24-70 together last year, and I mainly use it for sports videography. I put a cage and handle for a better grip and monitor handle, and I use a Ulanzi cooling fan to keep temperatures down. The fan is certainly a game changer with this camera. I think this does everything the sony FX30 does and more (better for photography) but the only downside being the overheating. Adding the fan, and keeping it at the highest setting brings down the temperatures a lot, and it's as easy as leaving it plugged in to an external battery for unlimited fan usage. This is the "do it all" camera and you can keep it small and light, or rig it up to have it preform like an fx30. Great camera

I would honestly prefer to have the sony FX3 over the a6700 or FX3, but with the price its non negotiable for casual to semi-professional use. I'd even argue with proper rigging, this can be used for professional use cases, like I will be doing in the near future.

Here is the thing. The A6700 is a great hybrid budget APC camera, for cinematic videos and photos. But filming at 4k 120fps all the time is too heavy for overheating its logic. I understand the expectation of filming for sports events is a great disappointment. For that, I recommend the FX30 and FF FX3 over the A6700 for sports events as some in the comments say. Because it has a fan and two Card slots that gives more benefit than the a6700. I will buy the A6700 for other purposes and it will be my first camera with changeable lenses. I have owned the Sony ZV1 for over 3 years and I am ready for the next step I did a lot of research before. I know that this camera will suit my needs. Really nice that you make more content about sports videography camera reviews keep doing that.

at 4k60 i’ve recorded an entire college basketball game. i record in clips as well and also i used the Ulanzi fan (not continuously). this is my first Sony camera but there is a lot of heat management involved for high quality video

Exactly what I did. I bought it for my b cam as main cam is fx30. Is perfect to gimbal work and short clips!! I use it a lot.

I'd been contemplating buying a A6700 for a while, but the overheating issues concerned me. Your view is spot on, where many just say it's not really an issue, or just buy a Ulanzi fan. I felt putting a fan on the plastic back would only help slightly, as you are not actually cooling the working parts. I ended up forking over the extra $400 for the FX30 with a built in fan, and I'm glad I did. Thanks for the honest review!

I’m using the a6700 professionally but I’m an extreme run and gun weirdo. I mainly shoot mountain bike events where I’m often riding a bike with my camera in a bag then whipping it out to get my shots. I went a6700 over FX30 because I find the viewfinder useful in bright light situations (can’t be mounting a monitor in most cases).

Haven’t experienced overheating issues but the longest clips I shoot are interviews that last maybe 5 minutes and I’m mostly shooting outdoors.

Works for me but, like I said, I’m not normal.

I must’ve missed it, but what frame rate do you film with? I use 24fps, and wonder about the overheating for my use. I don’t film sports, but I do a lot of outdoor film work.

Thank you for this. I was on the fence about this, now i know ill be going for thr fx30.

Great video 👏 i filmed our german basketball Top Four two weeks ago only with my new ZVE1 and two lenses 🎥 Sony 20 mm 1.8 and the Tamron 50-400 mm f4 😉 all handheld 🙈 but this small cam beast is awesome 😅 no overheating problems !

Ulanzi came out with V2 od the fan which uses spring latch instead of too weak suction cups.

Nope. I thought about it a few months ago but decided on the S5ii instead. Best purchase I have ever made! Used my S5ii outdoors filming lacrosse at 90+ degrees with no issues.

Dummy battery and v-mount definitely helps take out a lot of heat from the camera. Overheating is still possible - but not nearly as quick to compared to native battery.

Congrats on being on Sony’s list! I am wondering how the ZV-E1 would perform! I remember you posted a video saying it is not recommended, but I want to see it work! I hope you consider making a video about it just like this!

I use the Ulanzi fan and no more heat issue. I tested for hours of continuous use. No problems. One nice fact is that the fan fits on back of the camera and stays in place.

The over heading is the battery.. As we are now learning... like EVs lithium batteries are dangerous. where the external fan hooks up won't kool down the battery which is the danger issue

Appreciate the review and info as always! I’ve been looking into getting an FX30 and would love to know what other alternatives you would suggest if I’m coming from an a6400… Which I love but a camera with better video specs and low light performance would be nice

Great video and thanks for the honest review. I myself am looking at buying an a6700, can I ask what monitor you are using? Thanks,

With the original sony kit lens:-

Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens (Black)
Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Lens

How good are those lens for low light ?

Ofc am coming from a 1" sensor camera at 2.8 apt which kinda sux at low light...

Will i see big improvement ?
