We all know that fasting has amazing benefits: reduced inflammation, increased cognitive function, fat loss, decreased risk of metabolic dysfunction, and the list goes on and on.

But is there a correct way to fast? Is fasting for everyone? Should we exercise while we fast? How do we make the most of our fasts and how do we optimize our diets when we aren’t fasting?

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dr. Valter Longo answers all of these questions and more. Dhru and Dr. Longo discuss the key pillars of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), created by Dr. Longo to provide the body with the benefits of fasting without completely starving it. They also dive into the foundation of a longevity diet—how can we increase our lifespan and our healthspan using targeted nutrients and dietary protocols.

Dr. Valter Longo is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Known as the “Guru of Longevity,” Dr. Longo is currently Professor of Biogerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute of Longevity of the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, as well as Director of the Oncology and Longevity Program at IFOM in Milan. He is also the Scientific Director of the Create Cures Foundation and the Valter Longo Foundation.

Valter is the author of The Longevity Diet, a culmination of his 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe. It provides an easy-to-understand, accessible, and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition.

I would love to put Dr. Jason Fong and Dr. Longo together for debate their point, it’s so confusing for public…… one say fasting is great, the other says fasting is bad. I guess we the public has to use our own judgment to decide for our own health because we don’t know who to trust !!!

Great interview Dhru, My personal experience coincides with dr Walter. I feel great having breakfast, skipping lunch, and having early dinner

One centenarian couple in one of the documentaries about centenarians in Italy shared their daily routine and they have their first meal at noon and last meal at 6. If you get up not too early (say 9) have a meal at noon is not much different from having a breakfast in the morning at 8 or 9 as someone gets up early (say 6). His has been repeating gallstone as one of the bad things for not having breakfast. Why these two situations would be very different? What he has been repeating in various interviews about how bad it is not having breakfast doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about individual situations such as how early you get up and how late you go to bed.

I think is a very balance interview, Dr. Longo is a very smart man. He's approach is about balance.if I have a late dinner full of protein and fat, I sleep bad and I'm not hungry in the morning.
So a balance dinner before 8 o'clock works. The 5 days fasting mimicking diet change me in positive way.my tipe 2 and high cholesterol go down to almost normal.

I never ever skip breakfast always have a good healthy breakfast and then I eat my last meal around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. I also follow Langos fasting mimicking diet once every couple months

I've seen those studies that eating earlier is beneficial. I just don't understand why I feel so much better skipping early and eating late. I try again and again to eat in the morning, but I always feel worse due to it.

I found it weird, not only because there are dozens of researchers pointing out to the benefit of fasting (skipping breakfast) but specially for the fact that it can be any breakfast, sugary, loaded with carbs etc, still would be better than skipping breakfast, that sounds really odd

So skipping breakfast may not be the best idea after all and the 16/8 as well as other fasting protocols may even be seriously dangerous to your health. So Jason Fung is wrong and Valter Longo is right? Or vice versa now I'm really confused.

I think at the end of the doing what works for your body is best. Some people do fine skipping breakfast and some don’t. You just have to listen to your body. If you feel fatigued, and experience low blood sugar then break your fast. Over time fasting is supposed to make you feel energized and if your body is overwhelmed you might not see the benefits.

Super interesting, entertaining and immensely educational. I've watched many interviews with Prof. Longo, this is by far my favorite one. Well done and thank you both.

Why do so many other health professionals recommended skipping breakfast? I disagree with him.

I don't know where you found this guy, but his research is contrary to most others in the field. I believe longevity has more to do with genetics than anything else. I have done intermittent fasting for over 3 years and my found my numbers to be great and my weight to be balanced.

Eating breakfast, skipping lunch and eating dinner, is not intermittent fasting .
Mr Longo is changing his tune regarding fasting .

And I just heard Dr. Amy Shah and Dr. Andrew Huberman saying they skip breakfast. My head is spinning.

Great interview! Love Dr. Longo's ability to sift through extensive data and point out the missunderstandings of popular opinions based on partial data.

I think that the urge for sugar should be greatly reduced once your microbiome is fully adjusted.
