What would we do without the endless and free education of YouTube? One of the most life-changing things of our time! Thank you for sharing your expertise! I'm renting and I can't expect my landlord to fix anything.

1.) they do not want to put in the work it takes to fix it.
2.) they make more money when installing an appliance

Companies don't make money by selling parts - only products. They have zero incentive to sell you parts

Yes a recommendation for a new appliance seems to be the more common recommendation even when it may just need a repairable part

Good advice! I repair everything myself. I don’t know the last time I had a repairman in my house for anything.

Great video, amazing repair. I like your thinking and work attitude. I also think that doing a good repair is using the best products to repair. I always use 1/4 turn valves (double compression), SS flexible connectors for dishwashers, refrigerators and all sinks/toilets.
PS: I also like to use electrical cords and plug in dishwasher and disposer connections, this makes servicing much easier.

I did a similar cost-value repair for my dishwasher, clothes washer, dryer, fridge, car, vacuum, computer, and more.
The idea that I would have to buy all new rather than repair would mean I couldn't afford a mortgage.

I’d love to do handyman work like this. Working in a few bad apartments exposed me to a lot, to where I can fix most things around our house

Well, part of it is laziness, and the con, but it's also the 100+ dollars an hour plus travel for diagnosis, the markup on the part, the 100+ dollars and hour for the second trip... So dealing with a big company, unless you have really nice equipment, you've paid for half of the 10 year old machine by the time the repair is done enough to determine there's more to fix.

I have a rule, if the part costs of parts exceeds 50% of the cost of the appliance, I usually just get a new appliance but that depends on if I can afford it at the time. I had a choice recently to spend $160 for a part or get a new washer. I had already got a $70 valve so that was far exceeding the original cost. Now if I was rubbing pennies together, I'd have put it on a CC and fixed it. Food for thought. Learn to fix things, it will save you money big time.

Replacement brings in more money for that company. Service calls do cost a lot, however then they need to pay wages for repair people, pay for vehicles, and tools. Its FAR cheaper and from a money standpoint more lucrative to say "its garbage, just buy a new one"

I repair everything I can but now a days getting parts is a nightmare, my parts for a stove im fixing have been stuck at customs for a month

There’s nothing wrong with replacing. The only problem is if they DIDN’T give a repair option. You always give the fix to the problem. But you can always give them a price for a replacement or an upgrade. It’s not malicious it’s the proper way to do business. Some people don’t want to repair a 5-10 year old dishwasher and some do. OPTIONS are the key to customer service. Now being pushy on the upgrade is where most companies get the bad reputation.

Not me thinking that electrical tape was a "repair" at first
