People forget how terribly the Irish have been treated throughout history. The Irish actually *were* essentially slaves for centuries, and the rest were locked into a life of serfdom and starvation as the British held all of the land and took all of the food. Only in the last few decades or so has Ireland not been the poorest country in Western Europe.
