ProRes RAW Explained – Plus Footage

[Little correction here: We used an FS5, not FS7 (as is stated in the video).]

At this NAB show, we caught up with Atomos' Jeromy Young and he walks us through the brand new ProRes RAW format and everything there is to know about it. Let's dive right in!

Funny theres a camera they don't support over Jeromy's left shoulder - no CineDNG or ProResRaw for the Arri, or for the Cion.
Seeing less and less reasons to use ProResRaw.
The advantage of CineDNG, is it isn't compressed, and if you use the right camera, there's no colour science applied in the camera.
ProResRaw sounds more like a step beyond ProRes444, better, but still not the best for anything effects heavy.

WAIT, did anybody else thought the transition in second 0:03 was so freaking DOPE????

Can anyone confirm whether the recommended SSD spec required for ProRes Raw is same as the CDNG Raw or ProRes HQ/4444? Atomos haven't included ProRes Raw on their "supported media' sheet yet. Thanks in advance.

Will this External Recorder make available for users of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k to be able to record in Pro Res 4k

May I ask you if you could possible do a comparison between prores raw vs xavc-i on the fs7 to check the practical differences? I think you've stated before that the raw output on the fs7 is kind of bad compared to the internal recording

I think all of this is very interesting for the independent filmmaker. Cinema DNG is industry standard when it comes to RAW and I don't know any editing software that doesn't accept it. So his comment about that was odd especially considering only final cut accepts pro res raw at the moment. All new codecs take time to be adopted by editing software. If I'm doing paid work, I never go under 3:1 and usually shoot 1:1 if the client can afford the storage, but like everyone else said, I can't tell the difference between 1:1, 3:1 and 4:1 that my camera supports.

The BIG thing is why Atomos decided to provide this firmware update for only the Inferno and Sumo when their monitor such as the Shogun Flame can easily support the ProRes RAW Codec. Even their Ninja V can handle 880Mb/s so it could handle the codec too theoretically. But any of their monitor/recorders with an SDI input should get the upgrade. I don't see any reason why they would withhold.

Funny how it works only for Apple products

The eva1 footage looks better than the fs7 footage here.

Shame mirrorless cameras like the Sony a7iii, doesn't output RAW over SDI. Really like to see a hybrid mirrorless film and photo camera in the future.

Why you just grade it ?. You need to GRADE it in various WB scenario.

I have shot some footage with ProRes RAW on my Shogun Inferno. But as a windows user I am unable to edit or even watch that footage. Seems like a money-grabbing affair from Apple (as always), with a goal of forcing people to buy macs. After all, was it difficult fo add 2 bits to the format? I wonder, why other codecs like DNxhr (not sure with spelling here) do not evolve with 12 bit less compressed flavours?

Sorry - the title says "plus footage" but I can't seem to find the link?

Sony FS5 Mark 2 can go to 12 bit raw meanwhile the EVA1 can only output 10 bit raw.

But there's gotta be a catch to ProRes RAW right? As opposed to shooting Cinema DNG. Anyone know what is it?
Also can someone explain to me what does RAW 3:1, 2:1 and so on mean? Thanks.
