DON'T choose the WRONG CODEC for Sony FX30, A7IV, FX3, A7RV

What Codec to use for your Sony camera? XAVC HS? XAVC S, or XAVC S-I?
These are the questions we explore in this video.
Each recording format has its pros and cons for it. This video explains the differences between the codecs and why you might choose one or the other.
After this video I have decided to change the recording format that I personally use for majority of my social media content mainly to save on space.
Storage space is the main key factor to why you won't film in XAVC S-I because it has such large files.

ATTENTION: Just make sure you also test your codecs to see if that color difference is with your camera also. I am convinced it is with the codec and not camera specific in the A7IV and FX30.

There are actually situations where the S-I codec is lower quality than all of the others. Its prone to macroblocking. It's really only better when shooting scenes with a lot of motion. The HS codec is roughly twice as efficient and computers will handle it better if you're in the 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. It's when you go to 4:2:2 that computers will have a difficult time and you may benefit going to S since it's a bit less compressed.

The technical reasons in simplest terms: S-I records brand new images for each frame. Less compression but more data needed to do that. Easier for computers to handle but more drive space. S is h.264 and creates one full image every few frames (I frames) and in between those it determines just the differences from the last frame to the next. HS is h.265 and will do the same thing but instead of just looking at the frame before it it will also use the frame after it to determine the differences. That's why it's harder for computers to edit it but it maintains its quality at lower bitrates.

I started my video editing journey over a year ago and I used to wonder why videos never looked as polished as urs, after watching numerous courses on colour grading and also currently on a few colour courses with davinci and learning about colour spaces and all, am starting to really respect and appreciate your grade on a different level⭐

Totally agree!! S is the perfect combination of quality and compression as many reviewers have pointed out. Much easier to edit with and no discernible loss of quality. Clients who edit with my video files are much happier. HS not for everyone…Thanks for the nice video!!!

Jason, your approach to differentiating the Sony codecs is way good enough for this non pro guy. Thanks for making it easy!

Very informative Jason! Also props for being able to say "XAVC" over and over and not fumble over it.

I've just today about an hour ago actually ordered myself the FX30, and have always been set on that camera for a while. I'm so glad I subscribed to you a while back when I first discovered your FX30 videos, they've helped me out so much with knowing exactly what to get alongside the camera such as SD/ CFeXA cards. Very clear and concise explanations with every feature I've had questions with, thank you again and I'll be sure to let you know how I've faired with it once I put it to use for my videos!🙌🏻 🎥

As a serious amateur photographer who is getting into videography, I just want to say a huge thanks for your incredible videos sharing all this info, it's unbelievably valuable!

Would be great if you followed this up with a second video on colour profiles and shooting log - I still get a bit confused.

Cheers mate!

My takeaway is if you have a modern apple silicon laptop, then XAVC HS all the way, but frustrating there's only 24p and 60p, 30p is missing.

Love your content. as a new Sony shooter and fx30 owner. After watching this whole video I still have no idea what any of the codecs are or which I should use 😂

I do agree ! I would choose the "S-I" for my short movie projects and social network projet I would choose the "S"

I just use XAVC S 4K for balance between amount of data and image quality on my FX3 and I´m very happy so far.

How do you get the quality in your YouTube videos so sharp? Just well lit? It would be great if you did a breakdown workflow video about that. Thanks! 🙏🏽

Thank you. So many camera folks are pushing the HS but I shoot at 30fps and it doesn’t work in that setting, so this was very helpful to see the comparisons.

I've always shot with the HAVC-HS. The differences in picture quality and color are too little for me to really care for, most of which I'm able to tweak in Davinci anyways. So to me, the Pro's outweigh the Cons. Luckily, I've built my computer to be GPU heavy to be able to run Davinci Resolve and I've had no problems! Plus, when doing weddings, sometimes the clients choose to have all the unedited footage. I found that HAVC-HS can be played back on almost every computer. The other two, some clients cannot play back the RAW data. So in order to do that I'd have to take all the footage and render it in an MP4 file just so they can watch it on their computers or devices... and I don't want to run into that issue. Also, I love having footage be great right out of camera, and the Cinetone does great, especially with controlled lighting. To me, you can have to most gucci camera on the most gucci settings, but if your lighting is bad, it's going to look horrible anyways. If you have great lighting, and a lower-to-mid-teir camera, it's always going to look better! But yeah that's just me!

Try walking on a brick road and record in all these codecs. Artifacts on bricks will be noticeable for S and HS, but not in Intra. And it is noticeable to the point for not usable footage.
