Atomos: Recording & Editing ProRes RAW

ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ were the talk of NAB 2018 in Las Vegas this year. During NAB, Atomos announced their support of ProRes RAW on their SHOGUN INFERNO and SUMO19. In this presentation, Jeromy Young talks about Atomos' collaboration with Apple over the years, including ProRes RAW and the benefits it brings to both production and post production.

You can always shoot Pro Res Raw to get a clean picture and convert it to what ever format for export.

If "80% of all recordings are done in ProRes", then wouldn't it benefit Apple and BlackMagic Design to license this codec for Premiere Pro and AVID applications? Certainly, 80% of all video editors are not using Final Cut. Or, did that statement mean to imply 80% of Final Cut users use the original ProRes codec? I realize Final Cut is well regarded by many, but I seriously doubt there will be a mass exodus from other NLE's just to utilize ProRes RAW. Maybe Apple will be smart and make it PC compatible, too.

Very curious if we'll see a third party converter for cinemaDNG to ProRes RAW. That would be a workflow boom.

This reminds me of the Beta vs VHS war. We got stuck with crap VHS because they gave away the technology and Sony wanted royalties.

I use Resolve now and hoped it would be my last editing system, and I shoot with the FS7 and several other HD cameras. I also use the Atomos Shogun Flame. The problem with these tech wars is it costs us time, money & maybe clients when trying to have what clients want.

If you do only in-house productions, it may not matter. You can stick to a single system. If you shoot freelance, you need to have what the client wants and renting isn't always an option for last minute shoots or those that don't live in metro areas with lots of resources. So freelancers are stuck buying fleeting technologies.

Yeah yeah yeah.. if you own an EVA 1 or an FS7 etc... but what about the majority of filmmakers that don’t? ProRes RAW with Apples refusal to universalise it has made it inaccessible to the vast majority. Blackmagic on the other hand seem to not be as cagey and want to encourage its adoption of BMRaw with camera manufactures. An additional problem will be that ProRes RAW would likely not be adopted for DaVinci and BMRaw will likely go ignored by Apple for FCPX! So to put it in a nutshell.. single stream RAW formats are currently all still in a bit of a mess and one would have to think very carefully before wanting to adopt devices that utilise them.

Do not update your Sumo 19 to latest firmware v9.0. It has an admitted bug that affects Rec709 color. Stick with v8.4.1 until they get their shit together.

I'll never own a Mac and I'll never use Final Cut, even if I were a millionaire. I'm going to wait for another company to release RAW compression for free and for every camera, recorder and editing software.

No way my friend… you are losing all Davinci Resolve users… not very smart on your side not offering also an open format like cinema dng… what you say shows you gave no knowledge in the cinema world… You should not marry with any particular codec…not smart…. Hopefully, cameras will end soon recording raw internally … Good luck !
